Cant switch to AHCI mode

I have an Asus m5a99fx PRO R 2. When I installed the os the mobo manual told me the drives would be set at ahci by default. But when I installed the drivers in the device manager told me that it was still using ide mode. This same thing happened when I switched it on my old mobo. And my current installation is fresh. I have a 64GB Sandisk SSD and a 1TB western digital HDD. I am using the amd Series 9 controller not the asus one. Should I use the Asus Conbtroller?

that's just what the device subset is called, its in ACHI mode

What do you mean by a device subset

the settings are in your bios.

IDE/ATAPI is just what the HDD controllers were back in the day before they had SATA

its in ACHI mode

Yes, its set on AHCI by default. Would it be worth it to use the "ASMedia® PCIe SATA controller "

for my drives. MOBO Specs: https://www.asus.com/Motherboards/M5A99FX_PRO_R20/#specifications

i have the same mobo and im not really understanding what is going on. are you using the last SATA slots? those are run by the asmedia chip. i think sata 5-6

I'm using the AMD controller and I'm wondering if I should use the asmedia ones.

try both and bench your ssd using hdtune and stick with the one with  the best performance.

quick glance looks like you get better performance from the AMD controller.

OK thank you all for your help.
