Cannot 'Activate Windows'

On my new PC, I put Windows 8.1 Pro. But the 'Activate Windows' function doesn't work because I installed the OS onto a fresh drive.

Looking to windows.microsoft.com didn't really help that much.

Is there any way I can install Windows 7/8, then re-install my copy of 8.1 without losing any media (or my mind),

OR, could I wait for the 8.2 update and see if that will fix the problem?

If it's an upgrade key, then you need to install the old OS and then go through the upgrade installation rather than the full installation. I have issues simmilar to this, so I've gotten used to keeping install files backed up on a different drive and when I install my windows I disconnect my other drives.

So, putting 8.1 on a new disk is the same upgrading it? Man, that's annoying. So I guess the question becomes, "Can I install Windows 8 then upgrade to 8.1 without buying a whole new copy?"

Make sure the date and time are correct.

You'd have to do it from windows 7 unless you have an official windows 8 key/installation.

Ok but really, if I wait for the 8.2 update coming out this April, will this thing go away?
