Canada: CRTC asks internet users for help testing broadband speeds

Looks like the CRTC is going to finally try to break the deadlock between consumers and ISPs in regards to the speeds received. One of my friends pays for a 100mb connection but only gets around 20 down max in best case scenarios unless it's at off-peak hours, usually after midnight. I've had my connection go to shit where Netflix won't even stream at 720p and has to downgrade the stream.

I'm glad something is being done about this but I'm a little uncomfortable about the notion of installing a network monitoring device. There are already conspiracy theories abound about them and while I don't think the fears are well founded, I'm still not comfortable hooking up a monitoring device to my router.
