Can Wendell give me a light about Samba 4 AD DC?

Hello!

I'm trying testing the creation of an Active Directory using Samba 4 (4.1.6 at the time of the tests). I'm really confused, because I followed a bunch of guides and video tutorials. Each one with its own configuration with few minor similarities. All of them work, at least for those who made the guides/tutorials, I managed to make one work, but I tried to reproduce it in another machine and this evil thing doen't work. How can it be? I've tried in Debian 7, Ubuntu 13.10, even using Zentyal that's is specialized it doesn't work correctly, ClearOS, another specialized, for some reason doesn't allow me to register the machine which impedes the configuration/installation.

In the one that is working I am using Ubuntu 14.04 LTS + Samba 4.1.6.

Is it easy/possible to use FreeNAS to fully handle it?

H E L P ! ! !

Thanks

Also yes FreeNas does Windows-shares

Thank you very much. I am testing with non package versions. I am compiling samba and its working well in the tests I did so far.

Does FreeNAS work as a domain (ADDC) controller? Not only as a file server? Because ZFS is tempting.

It's very strange how repository version from Debian and Ubuntu gave such headache.

I also had problems compiling version 4.1.6 from samba.org source, 4.1.7 works fine.

Our problem, the big one, will be to migrate from to the new server since the current server has samba 4.0.0beta2 which was the available versions to install on Debian when my boss did it to recover from a disaster.

Yes it can be configured to be a domain controller. Freenas also uses samba 4. You can find doc on freenas website on how to set it up also. Good luck. :D

Thanks for the answer!

I recently migrated my Samba share and its completely dead. It even nuked my /run mount. I do have to say there is no real user docs and this thing is truly evil.

What kind of migration did you make? Samba 3 to 4? Didi yo run an dist-upgrade? If runa dist-upgrade you can really mess things up.

I unfortunately did many things and went down a dark hole. I'm pretty much starting from scratch. It is a headless server, I was busy setting up a remote desktop so I'm completing that so I can use the GUI for Samba - I tried the command-line tool and it made everything worse and it is also difficult to use.
