I see the whole amd vs nvidia question asked so damn much, atleast 3-4 times a week and every time I just want to facepalm. It would be handy if we had some kind of sticky on top of the gpu thread stating the unbiased pro's and cons of the two manufacturers. What do you think?
AMD:
Pros - the best GPUs for the money; fantastic performance for mining, and relatively cheap. OC rather well, and run rather cool. Great for gaming, especially Eyefinity (which is better than Nvidia surround), OpenCL - very powerful (comparable to CUDA in CL supported applications), more VRAM on higher-end cards, and wider memory bus-width to use it.
Cons - More limited OCing than Nvidia GPUs, worse performance scaling in CF (getting better with beta-drivers), less selection of waterblocks, more power consumption, and historically bad drivers initially.
Nvidia:
Pros - CUDA cores (fantastic for Photoshop, and other Adobe software), great OC potential (I've pushed my 680 past 1500mHz GPU core before), lots of waterblock selection, better multi-card scaling (SLI is better than Crossfire, currently), less power consumption, and generaly better drivers out-of-box.
Cons - More expensive for less power, smaller memory-bus-width, less VRAM (on some cards), Nvidia Surround is pretty terrible, essentially impossible to mine BTC on.
This list is by no means all-inclusive, but highlights most of the important topics.
The threads do get annoying but you have to realize there are alot of un-educated people out here who want to know how it may apply to them, thus the large number of threads. if you don't like them stay away from them like me. occasionally one catches my eye and i can educate them.
1.5Ghz OC? what the hell! was that even stable?
krypt OC'd his 680 to 1425 and fried the vrm. (he raped the silicon with voltage) and now it's unstable for everything (he RMA'd it and is getting a 7970)
Nvidia is getting too confy.. i Hope Radeon passes him in market share making it battle again like it used to be.
Altho i'm forced to pick Nvidia as it supports Lightboost which will allow to put my 120Hz monitor near CRT levels.
Oh I d stay away from them, I was just thinking that a sticky thread would be a nice thing to have on the gpu forums so they dont have to ask these questions. Also, im assuming you had to unlock the (I foget the name of it .-.) to overvolt that high, I can just about push 1292 mhz on mine with the voltage on its maximum recommended voltage, but I badly want to push 1300 just for ocd's sake xD
At 1.5ghz I wonder if the 680 beat the 7970 ghz? 0.o
I think this won't happen so much after the implementation of a search button. I think the next webpageupdate will kick some ass!
I think it's time to drop the stick and back away from the horse carcass....
