I think free is pretty cheap, this will do the job better than most programs you pay for.
I use norton personally
All antiviruses are useless. If you want security, working from limited user account and making your browser secure (adblock, noscript, web of trust) works way better than an antivirus.
AV marketing specialists create an illusion that antiviruses make you secure. It's simply not true, all antiviruses don't detect a lot of threats. If you just have a little common sense, you can use a PC without any protection at all and never get any viruses.
+1
80% of all malware comes because of exploits in Java (browser plugin), adobe reader, adobe flash and that kind of software. If you use click-to-play for browser plugins (media.click_to_play in about:config for ff) you can protect yourself against all of those.
Did you say norton? ( Facepalm ) I am stunned.
advast is a decent free one or you can upgrade to a payed version.
I use Kaspersky (what's everyones thoughts about that?). I've never had any problems with it, however, I came from norton previously, and didn't have any trouble (with viruses anyway... the actual program is horrible...).
Linux. Avoid using Windows like a plague. 99% of "viruses" are intended for Windows, anyway.
I use Microsoft Security Essentials (Windows 7) with AdBlock in Chrome. Best part is how its never popping up and yelling at me and it updates with Windows Update
I agree with brennan, although I use win8. Reason is I can't live w/o certain games (Skyrim!). If you can, avoid Windows. Or at least AVG. Thing is shit. Causing my system to crash in regular 2 day cycles (IRQL_NOT_LESS_OR_EQUAL and ALL drivers are up-to-date). It has to be that, from my troubleshooting. Can't remove it, even with their own removal software. Go figure. I'm gonna eventually have to do a clean reinstall, but that's a pain in the arse. Otherwise, Dissentient's advice is good.
Avast, Or Common Sense.
malwarebytes is the best av for windows. You can also run it with wine on ubuntu to scan flashdrives/harddrives for viruses.IE. bootable ubuntu flash drive with wine and malwarebytes to fix windows pc's. If you have a virus you can use the free copie to remove it. and if you want you can pay for it for active protection(have not tested active protection in wine). also if you dont have tdsskiller from kaspersky get it and scan your pc. tdsskiller is the best rootkit remover out there. also its free. Also adblock plus will solve 99% of you problems. (unless you let your grandma and or kids play with the pc.)
