Can running a GPU with no PCI-e power cables harm a motherboard?

I’m going to upgrade from a water cooled 1080 to a RTX 3080 assuming I can grab one. It may take some time to get a new block for the 3080. I have a X399 Designare, so my plan was to set an open slot as the primary display and use the 3080 there. I’m just wondering if there is a chance the 1080 tries to draw too much PCI-e slot power and fries something. Any one have experience with this?

Your computer won’t boot or pass POST if your hardware does not have sufficient power.

If the motherboard is worth its salt it won’t POST to prevent voltage issues.

Bingo

PCIe slots only provide like 75W of power, so there’s no way that’s enough juice for either card without using PCIe power cables.

Personally I wouldn’t even install it unless you have the proper power running to it.

Okay thanks for the information.

Last time I built a desktop computer was around a decade ago, back then the graphics card would simply throttle down or the PCIE slot would start melting. Neither is acceptable lol
