Can I use a custom router with Telstra (Australian ISP) Conection

Hi all,

This is mostly a Question for anyone in Australia and with Telstra that knows anything about doing this (anyone else is welcome to pitch in). after seeing how Telstra can easily remotly access your personal router, I was wondering how hard it would be for anyone else to get in... and if having a custom router would be a good idea. I also would not mind learning how this kind of thing works. I called there Tech support for something one time and asked why they have to remotely access my network for such simple tasks, I got some silly answer which I cant remeber now. I also asked if I could run a custom router, as I expected they said I cant but they have lied to me in the past... so has anyone is Aus done this? or any other suggestions

I was reading an article that possibly Telstra will be rolling out new routers that the public will be able to connect to "to widen and strengthen there network coverage, which I'm strongly against

Thanks in advance

Yeah you can. Just set it up with the same settings (PPPoE or PPPoA if you're on ADSL) and it will work. If you're on cable or something else then it might be different and I don't really know about that.

Yes - I never have and never will use the telstra modem.

Ok great, I have Cable, So I assume I will find the PPoe/PPoA on the modem page, or will it be different for cable. dose anyone recommend any routers?

It will be different for cable. But if you currently have a separate modem and router then you can replace the router with whatever you like, just use the same settings as your current one and you'll be fine.
