Can I split traffic between local and internet thru a pair of virtual interfaces?

I want a simple way to keep traffic statistics separately between local and internet-bound traffic.

vnstat is absolutely perfect in its simplicity for this task. The only downside is, it cannot distinguish between the destination of the traffic. But it can keep stats separately by interface.

Therefore one idea I had, is to create 2 virtual interfaces that route only local / remote traffic and monitor those with vnStat. Can something like that be done?

I want something DEAD SIMPLE. I don’t want gui, I don’t want a ridiculous grafana dashboard, I don’t want alerts, I don’t want paid shit.

What I want is precisely the sophistication of vnstat, except split by local and internet.

No one had anything to say, but that’s OK.

I got a separate NIC for faster LAN access and now traffic is naturally split between both interfaces.

Talk about a solution.

Yes, it’s a protocol called NetFlow NetFlow - Wikipedia
