Can I re use my cpu?

Hey guys, just a quick question, can I re use my I7 3770 cpu with the original cooler and place it on a gigabyte motherboard? Is it possible, also will anything change, like bios for example?

Thanks :)

Which gigabyte Motherboard? If it's the same socket as the last one it was in, then yes, yes you can.

As for BIOS changes, it depends on which you get. Most Manufacturers have their own versions of Bios.

The motherboard its currently in is a acer.inc

Thats why im asking tho, the cpu itself is also intel, is there anyway way this could work?

You didn't really answer his question at all. He asked what model the motherboard was. Acer and Asus make tons of different boards. The specific model is important.

You have an Ivy-Bridge processor. That means you have an LGA 1155 socket. The CPU will work on any Intel board with this socket. (Either another Ivy-Bridge or a Sandy-bridge) An older mobo (One made when only Sandy-Bridge existed) may need a BIOS update to work with the CPU.

Gigabyte makes AMD motherboards too, and lots of different sockets/chipsets. So, maybe.

Which specific motherboard are you looking to use?

I dont know what number my motherboard is, where can I find that on the motherboard? It has some codes here and there? Are u meaning by any intel motherboard, does that include gigabyte?

No Idea which specific motherboard, maybe one that supports the intel 1155 socket? I mean, in general asking, can I just a motherboard from the gigabyte range and plop the i7 3770 into it?

You can only put the CPU in the gigabyte motherboard if it is the same socket type as the CPU you are using.

Lets say you were using a socket 1155 CPU then you would need a socket 1155  motherboard.

As for what brand it really doesn't matter except for the socket type being the same. Gigabyte works with Intel and AMD but only with CPU's and motherboards that share the same socket.

I'm trying to be as specific as I can be here. But the lack of information from your end is making it hard. So just to be clear one last time. The CPU and motherboard must, and I mean must, have the exact same socket type or it will damage the CPU and the motherboard.

The Intel Core i7 3770 will work in the following motherboard 'chipsets':

  • B75 (recommended - standard feature set)
  • H77 (recommended - more advanced features)
  • Z77 (more expensive than H77 and intended for overclocking, no point for you to get it however it is compatible)
  • H61 (most basic features, somewhat dated, may require BIOS update)
  • H67 (standard features, somewhat dated, may require BIOS update)
  • Z67 (standard features + overclocking, somewhat dated, may require BIOS update)

The B75 and H77 are the ideal motherboards you want - they can be made by Gigabyte, MSI, Asus, Asrock, ECS, or Foxconn. Gigabyte and Asus are probably the highest quality, though I'm basing that comment entirely on hearsay and don't know for certain.

You can't simply say yes or no to whether a Gigabyte motherboard can take its place, since Gigabyte (and similarly Asus, MSI, Asrock, etc.) are manufacturers and make a wide range of different motherboards. A processor belongs to a certain family (the i7 3770 belongs to Ivy Bridge), and a family of processors will only work with certain sockets (Sandy Bridge and Ivy Bridge will work with Socket LGA 1155). Within a certain motherboard socket are different chipsets, with a different range of features (H61, H67, Z67 were designed for Sandy Bridge w/ the 1155 socket, but with a BIOS update will work with Ivy Bridge as well. B75, H77 and Z77 boards are updated versions with more modern features and will support Ivy Bridge processors out of the box, and will also support the older Sandy Bridge processors).

I hope this helps.

If you can simply give us the model of your computer (I presume you purchased a full computer) we'd be able to better offer you advice since there are potentially other things to consider (like whether the motherboard needs to be a certain form factor).

Why are you looking to upgrade the motherboard of your computer? Are there certain features your motherboard does not offer that you need? We may also be able to help you figure out what motherboard would be most useful to you

My mind= Blown away. You simplified it so much for me. Genius! Thanks, I dont know what to say, but u just helped me know what to choose. Thanks alot again man, and thank you to everyone else who helped :) you guys rock!

I bought a Acer Aspire M3985 with i7 3770, all stock parts made from the factory. The reason I want to upgradw is because of this (very long story):

Firstly, I bought a gtx 660, all was fine and well, until it wasnt able to fit in the case of the m3985, then I bought a bigger case, until I found out that the cords from thw power box (500w) didnt reach the mini atx motheboard.

So im like what the hell, if im going to get a new motherboard, I might as well get new ram, and a power supply, and then I said, instead of buying a new cpu, why not just usw my current i7 3770 instead of buying a new one (more lower like i5)

And then, this thread was born.

:)

Ahhh, alrighty. Have at it, then =)
