I built a PC just over a month ago, here are the specs:
AMD FX 8320 (OCd from 3.5ghz to 4.4ghz with stock cooler and good temps)
HIS IceQ Radeon HD 7870 (OCd from 1000 core to 1103 core, and memory clock from 1200 to 1350)
Some 8GB kingston ram @ 1600mhz
1TB seagate HDD 7200RPM
Asus M5A97 Motherboard (i think its 4+2 power phase, heard people getting insane OC's with it)
Some antec case
NO DVD drive
Ok, so I have this Corsair CX500M power supply... with these overclocks I don't see it shutting off or any wierd things happening. People said go atleast with 600W for this build, but I was on a strict budget.
Basically I want to OC my CPU to ~4.8ghz (with an aftermarket cooler ofc), and my HD 7870 to 1250/1500.
Would anything happen to my computer if my power supply can't handle it?
:D
Thats a nice overclock on just a Asus M5A97
normaly if you have a good psu, i would shut down the pc. but it can also just die. becarefull with that, wenn you gonne blowup a psu, it can also kill some other hardware.
You need more power 600w+
I think you should go easy on that board. But if you got the balls, then do it. On the other hand you shouldn't overclock any other component than your cpu or get another HDD, more memory etc. because, then you're maybe going to fuck things up..(PSU exploding). But personally I would wait and see how it works out on 4.4ghz and maybe later you could oc some more.. Would be terrible to burn your mb. So if you really won't to OC "safely", get a better/newer board, with more power phase's and a bigger PSU - and when your at it, get a bigger cpu cooler. Also how is your temps at full load?
I've decided not to overclock anymore, not worth the risk for the small increase in performance.
Temps I'm getting without OC
31 C idle
64 C load
Overclocked
35 C idle
70-72 C load
I would've expected much higher temps with stock cooler, maybe I got lucky. Lol
the stock cooler isnt that bad, it only gets loud on full load. i use the stock cooler from the 8350 , with gaming it gets realy loud like an airplane or wen using prime, but i never get it higher then 45 degrees on stock speed. i didnt test prime for a couple of hours yet. but someday i will buy a more silent cooler anyway.
