C226 Mobo and Memory Compatibility

I am currently trying to build a home server and I want to build a server that is LGA 1150 with the C226 chipset. I have picked out a board that looks like something I am familiar with and can work with.

My issue is that this Mobo has an absolutely atrocious memory compatibility list. I want to go 2x8gb ECC dimms but they have none on the approved list. I am willing to bet there are much better ATX server boards out there but I don't know what to look for.

I am looking to build this in a Fractal Define R4 case and I will be using an old GTX 460 to power the graphics.

I would really appreciate if someone can tell me if it is too much of a gamble to try memory not on the list, or point me in the direction of a better mobo/memory combo.

I like this Asus workstation board: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16813132014 It has the c226 chipset and this is the supported memory list: http://dlcdnet.asus.com/pub/ASUS/mb/socket1150/P9D_WS/Manual&QVL/P9D_WS_memory_QVL_20130506.pdf
