So I have a zalman zm1000-hp, which was released in 2007.
So yeah, 8 years ago I bought it. Which is worrying. Still, it been powering my system pretty much 24/7 for all that time with little issues. I have noticed lately that I now get crazy cap noises. If I load up GTA 5, the "buzzing" noise comes through the speakers to the point where its taking over the game music....
I have also noticed when my neighbour turns off his light switch, it makes my speakers pop. I guess, this means that the PSU is not filtering it out...
I am wondering is there anything I can, other than buy a new PSU. Which I don't want to commit too, because of the money and this one is still working.. So seems a shame!
I know its the money issue (believe me, I have the same problem) but I'd personally buy a new PSU. IF it was to die on you, it 'ccould' do damage to your system!
A couple of months ago I had a similar problem with my old 700W PSU (It wasn't a major banded PSU and was about 2 - 4 years old) and pretty much very time I loaded up a game the PSU would buzz consistently and every now and then you could smell burning coming from the unit. Long story short the PSU quickly died and wouldn't turn on anymore. This failure was definitely caused by my GTX 970 because the issues with the PSU only surfaced when I upgraded from my GTX 550 TI to the 970. My question is, have you upgraded your system recently possible with a new GPU? If so then that could be the cause of these issues and downgrading would possible put a stop to it. Obviously this wouldn't be ideal especially if you bought an expensive graphics card.
Power supplies are jealous lovers and when they die they try and take their partners with them. I would heed the warning it is so politely giving you now lest you find yourself purchasing more than just a power supply when it decides to give up the ghost.
I'd say 8 years is a good run for a PSU. My old PSU which cost me £20 was around 3-4 years old when it died but my new PSU which actually arrived yesterday is an RM1000i and has a 7 year warranty so hopefully it will last as long as your current PSU.
