Does anyone have experience building their own wireless router using pfsence or using a ALIX Board. i have some spare cpus on my hand i thought i might put them to use and im tired of all this consumer crap product that can't handle what i do
I recently helped install one of these in a small business. The guy that was installing it is really into pfsense so he got one of these and set that up. I'm not sure on the specific model but it was a pretty cool little box.
My friend is currently running pfsense on an old p4 with a gig of ram and an old pci dual intel nic. He says that it is screaming fast as far as routers go.
In my experience it a better idea to have the router and the wifi access point as 2 different units. usually your POP is in the corner of your house so your wifi doesn't cover the whole house. so moving the access point to the center of the house just makes sense.
For my network, I am using an old DSL Modem as my Access point. Along side 2 8 port switches and a Dell 2400 running PFSense
