So I’m planning to build my sister a gaming rig as a christmas present; I’ve got some old hardware left from upgrading my personal rig that I plan to use(or sell). My current dilemma is which CPU/MB combo to use. I have a 4690k(OC’s to 4.6ghz) left over from upgrading my rig to a 4790k and was planning to get another z97 board to use it. However I was also thinking of eBaying it(sells for around $150) and going with a Ryzen 3 1200 and B350 motherboard since the z97 boards are still pretty expensive.
I’ve already got a case, PSU, and hard drive/ssd. I’m thinking I’ll go with something like the 1050ti for the GPU unless I find a good deal on something locally. She’ll probably end up getting my 980 when I decide to upgrade(I’m waiting for high refresh rate 4k/ultrawide monitors and the 11xx series nVidia cards), so whatever it gets at first will be temporary.
Anyway mainly trying to figure out if I should eBay the 4690k or not. I guess I could get a cheaper h-series motherboard for it, but I’d feel bad not overclocking it.
Dpending on when Coffee Lake actually launches in volume, it may well be that Ryzen drops in price, whereas that old 4c/4t intel part is also going to depreciate hard once they’re here.
OCed Ryzen and b350 are much more future-proof, plus having to buy ddr3 (2nd-hand price basically 80% of new ddr4, where I live) means much lower resale value down the road. Though I’d hold off a bit buying the new parts for the same reason.
Yh I would sell, seeing as with every CPU launch 1150 becomes less and less attractive, so getting a good bit of money out now would definitely be the better option.
Well that seems pretty conclusive and pretty much echos my own thoughts on the matter. Now I wish I’d just sold the i5 months ago when I bought my i7(which I got a good deal on at Microcenter). :-/ Of course at the time Ryzen was just a pipe dream. I do really like the upgrade path with Ryzen; she would be able to go all the way to an 8 core if needed. I wish I had that option on my z97 rig.
Actually a 12c, if 7nm goes as planned.
Still, best not get ahead of ourselves – even though GF is getting a lot of help this time around, they’re still GF.
Get a b350 and a 1500 at least. Anything under that is a waste of time for a gaming rig imo. Otherwise look for something like free geek for a z97 board.
Yeah, that is a good point. I keep hoping I’ll find a deal on a z97 board on the local craigslist. If I hadn’t just upgraded my rig to the 4790k I’d be tempted to get myself a Ryzen 1700 and give her the z97 setup, but I’m doing high refresh rate 1080p myself so I need all the clock speed(my i7 does 4.7ghz) I can get.
I am tempted to go ahead and put the i5 on eBay pretty high(maybe $180) and see if someone bites; then I can wait for holiday sales and maybe get an even better deal on a Ryzen setup.
Yes, do that. The modern platform isn’t much faster in games but you have better connectivity and a real upgrade path. Sell your leftovers now, wait for deals. Holidays are four months away, more than enough time to gather everything on the cheap.
You guys can’t be serious, right? R3 1200 is lagging behind 4690k in raw gaming and you are conclusively selling better performing part to buy worse? Are you really serious?
Get a low end Z97 or even low end Z87 for 100$ and be happy with it…
You may even be able to find it cheaper. There were some anniversary boards for dirt cheap…
Seriously, 4690k is severely powerful cpu. Don’t just sell it like that…
The fatality is not the low end. It’s just the cheapest I found in my 2 minutes search.
Also yes, Asrock, the brand, that have been consistently high quality for the last billion generations of motherboard.
I know Ryzen is glorious people’s choice and cool and hip and all, but I fail to understand why people keep recommending it for GAMING rigs, when Ryzen isn’t hot tits for GAMING. If she’s a streamer maybe, sure. But if you’ve already got the 4790k, why would you go to the hassle of selling it and now have to shell out for now a new cpu AND motherboard ONTOP of a new GPU? Why not wait until you can buy a motherboard for the chip you already have, which is still more GAMING oriented than Ryzen is?
no. It isn’t. As has been shown time and again. If you’re doing other things AND gaming, Ryzen is a good choice. If you’re JUST GAMING, Intel has shown to be better. That was the entire comeback from the AMD camp when it was shown to fall behind in JUST GAMING, ie “it’s not for people who ONLY plan on gaming.”
I went back and looked at the benchmark results between the 1200 and 4690k; the Intel part definitely has a lead in performance. It’s not a massive lead though; probably with the level of GPU the rig will have it’ll be GPU bound on most titles anyway.
Anyway the main thing I’m debating on at this point is whether or not it’s worth it to move to the newer platform so there’s a better upgrade path. It looks like it’s worth it to sell the i5 now if I can get something around $180 for it as that would pay for the 1200 and motherboard outright. I might even be able to go with a Ryzen 5 1600 if there are some good holiday deals.
Thanks for all the replies; do try an keep it civil though. This isn’t an Intel/AMD debate thread. I’m platform agnostic; I don’t care which I end up using.
