Building my first nas

hi everyone,

I'm looking to buy a nas and ofcourse i'm gonna make it myself. But is really don't know about which parts to choose for a  nas and what you can do with a nas. i know you can put storage on it and heard some random stuff with running a os inside the nas os. the nas needs to replace a 7 year old external hdd.

- Needs to last ~7 years (hdd can be replaced if more storage needed)

- Freenas

- Fast (it's not for photo's but for all files from a company and they write and read to the files on the nas.

- 3tb raid 1 (wd red probably) and maybe a 120/250gb ssd for cache.

- needs to work with linux and windows

-enough pci-e lanes (so i can put a raid card in it if i need like sata 1200 or something like that)

-not to big, corsair 200r maybe but need more 3.5 bays, fractal core 1000 looks good but has only 2 3.5 options, node 304 looks also good but itx board don't have much pci-e lanes.

-400-800 euro ?? how much is a normal nas in price?

http://tweakers.net/gallery/543286#tab:wenslijst something like this? it's not complete but it's a start.

i heard some stuff about ecc and buffered ram but i don't now if i need it. i don't have spare ram. i watched the video's about a nas from teksyndicate but it didn't helped me much.

This should completely satisfy all of your NAS needs for years, although it would be worthwhile to check and ensure that the AMD APUs are supported by FreeNAS or your intended operating system.

oh srry i'm dutch. i need to know if you need cpu power to make your nas faster etc. and ecc and buffered ram? i don't know about the lan port on that mobo but asrock the asrock i was thinking about has a good one.

Is this AsRock one referring to the Atom board that Wendell made a video on?

if it is, then it is one of the best boards you could use for a NAS. It's just quite expensive here in the US, so I didn't opt for it.

ASRock z87m Extreme4

can someone link me a motherboard that supports ecc ram?

does it have to be intel in the first place?

nope,

okay cause some am3+ boards do support ecc if im right.

But yeah then your case size will be an issue... cause it needs to be ATX then

that's sad. but if the board has a lot of pci-e lanes it's ok. i was looking for the node 804. which am3 board?

i don't know yet if i'm gonna do something with virtualstuff so the cpu needs to have that. still don't know if i need ecc ram. the nas is mostly used for storing really important data en they change the documents on the nas. they don't put their stuff on it if their finished. so they read and write alot to it. don't know if ram is important or not.

if you want ECC on intel you probably have to look up to the server grade C224 chipset boards or the Z87 WS. But yeah those things cost a ton..

yes i found that out sadly. i think i will choose the z87m extreme4. looks good and hast the pci-e i want with a good lanport. it's 87 euro without taxes so it's not to much. looks like it's gonna last 7 years :).

yeah well if ECC is important to you, like i said allmost every Asus Am3+ board does support ECC But yeah, then you be stuck with ATX size, if you want 40 pci-e 2.0 lanes.

But yeah im still looking up for an intel board. cheapest C224 board from asrock ive found sofar is €150

is the build i have now good? i really don't know what to get still. the xeon is probably overkill but it's for 6 users max at the same time

the board look really really good, but it has a realtek lan chip which i'm not a fan of. but running a 8 core for 7 years is alot of juice sadly. i can buy a 8320 and downclock it to 2ghz or something like that. or a fx 6300. i was planning to downclock the 1230v3 so it's not using that much power. the nas is on 24/7

Well the Xeon is basicly a very nice chip for its price point especialy for a nas, but it has no igpu. so you need to buy a gpu aswell.thats something to keep in mind.

But probably more people will jump into this soon. Also Wendell could probably give you some more good advice aswell. ☺

i saw some people using it without a gpu/igpu. you need one to set everything up and than you can unplug it. i have a ati x1550 so i an use that.

You really don't need ECC RAM for a standard NAS... It just doesn't provide a significant benefit to you.

oh ok thanx. i see a lot of people struggling with it and i can't find answer...

this is probably the build. 3tb is enough for now (i hope) but i can easily upgrade.

do you know were i can check if freenas will work with my motherboard (lanport etc)
