Building a pc for my pops (he's kinda cheap)

i am getting ready to build a pc for my father, he is using a 10+ year old machine that runs vista...yeah i know. anyway, to the point. what do you folks recommend for a CPU and MOBO. i am more of a power user and dont really pay much attention to the lower end/ budget stuff so wondered if anyone had some insight for me

AMD apu + 8g's of decent ram with a half way decent GPU on win 7. don't go win 8 unless he wants something new to try or look at. but if you wanted to go for the higher end stuff on a budget. here's my recomends below

FX 6300

asus M5 970

8g's ram at 1600 or better with CL 9

500g HDD (min)

GTX 760 or R9 270x

decent 750w PSU rated at bronz or better (i pref gold or better)

win 7 HP

this will run about 900 when said and done and it will destroy most pre built pc that you get at the market that's full of junk and crap parts

You're going to need to be a little more specific than that. Do you only want a CPU and motherboard? What is your budget for those two things? What form factor do you want for the MB? Would you like to do something with integrated graphics? If you want a full system build, what is the budget for that? Do you want a discrete graphics card? Etc.

There is no way that build needs a 750 watt power supply.

yup. 500W would be more than enough for that build. also. that build would be closer to $750, even with Windows. (and a case lol)

i would put together a build, but im in my PC class at school right now <.<

looking to stay in the $700-$800 range for the whole build.  I am happy to look at whole build specs but was mostly interested in opinions on MOBO and CPU's and i can handle the rest. most likely will be getting discrete graphics card, but am willing to consider on board graphics if it is to much of a strain on his budget.

What will he be doing with the pc?

+1

You could probably go with the 8320 and the M5A99X EVO R2.0 if you wanted to save a few dollars.

Yes... but the question still lingers..... what will this guy be doing with his PC? :P

True. I figured there would be some kind of rendering and/or gaming since he said he was probably going to put a graphics card in it. With that budget, that seems like the best option for almost any scenario.

This is what I built for my dad- http://pcpartpicker.com/p/38cVS

If your dad is just doing taxes, sending emails and browsing the web the build above is more than enough (judging by his old pc, he can't be doing anything too intensive). Something to seriously consider is form-factor, as a smaller pc can make a huge difference.

To make a good build, though, we need to know what his needs are to spend the budget properly.

sorry was away from computer. so...the reason i was thinking about doing discrete graphics is so that the computer can be used for media distribution to his tv's and possibly some video editing(very amateur)

Thanks to you all i will post an update in the next weeks or 2 after I build

all that can be done on integrated. especially newer chips. by "Media Distribution" what do you mean exactly? like do you mean stream content to the tv wirelessly? or simply hook the tv up to the computer via HDMI cable?
