Building a new rig for LANsyndicate

So, in glorious honor of the LANsyndicate that is to be hosted, I've decided it'd be in my best interest to start a new build for a few, but important reasons:

  • My current build has the NZXT S340, and I do not want to spend time and energy trying to make it fit inside a big bag, that might get tossed into the underbelly, damaging the system.
  • I would be a lot more convenient for the LAN, cause I'm sure most people would bring a SFF rig, especially if they're flying or traveling from a great distance (with the exception of automobile).
  • I need one anyways, I have a friend, and I could just bring this over to his house, instead of my current rig.

So, for my list, I'm also gonna be going through some parts, and why I chose them. The general idea is that I want to keep the costs low (this may change, considering a recent raise at one of my jobs).

List: http://pcpartpicker.com/p/P26FjX

  • CPU: Athlon X4 860K - A very powerful CPU for it's price, being only $75 and overclockable.
  • CPU cooler: Needed something small, but quality enough for cooling the OC'd 860K; 240mm rads would be a tight fit, or may not compatible with the case.
  • MoBo: Gigabyte GA-F2A88XN-WIFI Mini ITX FM2+ - Despite it's very long and unattractive name, it has WIFI and Ethernet capabilities, supports overclocking features, etc.
  • RAM: is RAM
  • Storage: The SSD seemed like a great deal, 240GB for $80, and 1TB for storage.
  • GPU: GTX 970 - Remember how I said I'd want to keep my costs low? Well, this exact card is currently in my rig. Instead of buying a new GPU, why not just reuse my current one, that I won't be using for three days? It'll keep it's use, keep my costs down, and have a powerful GPU under the metal.
  • Case: Fractal Design Core 500 - This case intrigued me a little bit, as I was on the lookout for a SFF case, and this seemed small enough to fit my needs, and to be able to take on the plane as a carry-on. At least I hope.
  • PSU: EVGA SuperNOVA GS 550W - I really liked the modularity of this PSU, and it should provide enough wattage for both the GPU and CPU to be overclocked.

Now, since there's still enough time, this build should definitely be seeing some changes in the near and far future before LANsyndicate. Who knows, the whole build might see an overhaul. Let me know what you guys think, probably some suggestions? Cash constraint isn't too much of a problem for me, really only as a utility to not just completely ruin my wallet.

Should check out the Elite 130

Or if you're feeling really crazy go GPUless in an ultra tiny PC with something like

Mostly you just need an APU with fast RAM

I would have said Elite110, but GTX970... The case don't take more than 210mm gpu...

I'm using a fractal core 500 for a lan itx build.

I think its a bit big for a carry on, it's quite fat
