be quiet!'s mostly been making comparatively noisy supplies in recent years, though they’ve finally started supporting fan stop on a couple recent models.
Seasonic’s like Noctua. Often high forum rep, often hit and miss engineering. The GX-1000 has Seasonic’s characteristically bizarre fan control is a poor choice for a quiet build. It’s cheap (here anyways), which is arguably a feature. I’d settle the dGPU to close the power budget before trying to select a supply. When you get there, consider the Cybenetics noise maps for the supplies of interest.
From what’s been said so far, though, probably more like RM850x. Core Reactor II 850’s also a good supply but lacks fan stop and has a fairly high minimum spin, so is no good for either noise and dust. Leadex VII XG 850W if you can get a competitive price.
Airflow cases consistently measure quieter than ones marketed as silent. Even be quiet!'s marketing refers to it as a silence concept rather than an actual noise reduction. The silent cases might help some in suppressing noise from 3.5s but available data’s ambiguous.
Seems to me the primary design issue here is this is a high dust use case so is either going to take a lot of cleaning, running aftermarket dust filters that’ll require greater noise to maintain airflow, or a bunch of taking magnetic filters on and off.
See one of this thread’s previous versions for the no dust filter case. With add on filters it’ll be about the filters.
20 dB(A) 3.5s are all pretty much interchangeable for noise. Either you get them to spin down while recording or put them in a NAS someplace else.
2 x 64. Right now it’s just CP2K64G56C46U5 and F5-6000J3444F64GX2-TZ5RK, I think, the latter of which won’t fit under a dual tower.
Double the price for fans that aren’t any better? Also, the cream and brown NF-A12x25 G1’s pretty much replaced by the G2. G1s are still around but at least here the G2’s slightly cheaper.
NH-D15 G1’s an overpriced legacy cooler that’s been trailing the market for years. NH-D15 G2’s even more overpriced and thus arguably farther behind compared to same price competition. There are some niches where the G2 can make sense despite its bulk and poor value but, generally, it’s an unattractive choice.
Not really happening as NH-D15 G2 LBC’s underspec for the 9950X’s 200 W default PPT. The basic dual tower options are to eco mode the 9950x to 142 W PPT, noise limit the fan curves and let the 9950X thermal throttle, or use 9900X at its 162 W default PPT. For any of these it’d make more sense to fan swap a Phantom Spirit.
It depends on workload power intensity and how boost gets allocated but if you want to run a 9950X quietly-ish at 200+ W at ~30 C a decent current gen 360 AIO’s probably a better choice.
Probably won’t make much difference. NF-A12x25 G2 and NF-A14x25 G2 aren’t bad aside from the 2x cost riser but the better current gen cases are coming with fans that are nearly as good to, in some cases, pretty well tied or marginally more performant.
Sounds like B580 or 9060 XT if buying new. If used you can look for one of the ~23 dB(A) dGPUs, though if it’s sitting in fan stop it really doesn’t matter and if the dust filters are on and the dGPU’s spun up probably you’re not getting that quiet. The higher the power the greater the fan noise and odds of audible coil whine so I’d focus on the 200-250 W range to start.
End of life’s this October. Not going to be a good 10 year choice with an Ethernet connection.
If chokes make a difference with the 2i2 just quit with the unbalanced cables. Avoiding onboard wifi and Bluetooth shouldn’t matter either, though if you’re feeling paranoid you can disable them in the BIOS or pull the 2230. B850 Steel Legend’s a fairly difficult to beat default.
