I found out recently that a compaq KB I have is actually a buckling spring KM. I have thought of buying a new KB soon for le mechanicals but I have one.
Opinions? I think its really retarded that a mechanical keyboard is 140 bucks. Thats just not reasonable to me.
If you type a lot and don't do a ton of gaming I'd say buckling spring, however its fine for games that don't require tons of key presses such as MOBA's. Cherry just gives you more variety in switches and arguably greens are as close to buckling as you can get. I like Cherry Browns mostly because for FPS and fast paced games it gives me easy key presses along with the right amount of feed back.
As for price, most buckling spring keyboards are going to be pretty pricey... unless you get yours free at work ;) Look at Cooler Masters keyboards if you are looking for something inexpensive but reliable.(For cherry that is)
I dunno I feel like people just feed into hype. I've always liked the old style laptop keyboards. Short press butterfsy switches. If I could get that as a KB for my DTop I might die.
AND NO BULLSHIT ISLAND CHICLET SHIT, if there are butterfly keys on a desktop keyboard somewhere I might die. I own one and its an M$ ERGO KB. Still the dream though.
I am very much a fan of mechanical boards, as a hobby as much as a tool. Spent a lot on one of them and very little on another 150 for on and 30 the other. Both very nice in their own way for the own applications.
As a tool alone unless you will be doing typing as you job yeah the price is steep, but as above they can be had very cheap if you know what you are doing. Much in the same way console people say PCs cost thousands PC people know you can do it on the cheap. Untrained eyes see mech kbs are money pits when they can be had for very cheap.
That is not to say the mechs are not money pits, if you want them to be well $500 is no unreasonable or more for the perfect board.
I'm a fan of both Cherry MX (Blues, Greens and Whites) AND the IBM Model M. Have a snoop around. Personally I prefer the Model M feel over the Cherry MX keys, but that's just personal preference. You can pick them up on eBay for around $60-70 used, and as long as it's a reputable seller, it should work perfectly fine. Unicomp keyboards, as far as I know, are basically just as good, but I wanted to go with the authentic kind.
Basically, you can have my model M when you pry it from my cold dead hands xD
Cherry MX keyboards are nice as well, but they're generally more expensive than what I paid for my model M. I have a Quickfire TK that is now my work keyboard and it's really nice for typing, too. I type more than I play games that require lots of fast keypresses.
Khail are just cherry clones. Can be lumpped in with all the others like Gateron, Outemu, Greetech, TTC, Razer and probably about 6 other reasonavle common Cherry MX derivatives/clones. Each has their own goods and bads but all are under the MX type.
That is part of why I love mechs, the near infinite combinations. Board layout, caps material, caps colour, caps texture, LEDs, RBG, Sip sockets, switch housing, plate or PCB mount, plate material, PCB programmability, switch manufacturer, switch feel, spring strength, silencing methods, case material, led underglow, and a few more I am sure. All customisavlw if you want to. With so many combinations you are almost sure to find something you like.
Far too many people say, I dont like reds or blues so cherry is not for me, well shit thats like saying I dont like coffee so drinks are not my thing.
Are the switches on the logitech k740 not butterfly switches? (I don't have much experience with different types of keyboards, but on the box it says butterfly switches)
