BSOD! installing windows xp

Alright i have installed and reinstalled operating systems dozens of times but this time i ran into unexpected trouble:

my brother bought a new computer ($800 pre built with monitor etc. from local store) It's an HP blah blah doesn't matter he just uses his computer for web browsing msn facebook etc... anyways it had vista on it and i let him try it for a week and he didn't like it so i went to install windows xp for him but just as the setup was about to start i got the BSOD and a stop 0x0007b error.. so i googled it and figured out it was somewhat of a hard drive problem? anyways just wondering if anyones got any ideas on what i should do -- if you need any more info i'd be glad to give it to you thanks

format?

format would not do any good i am thinking because it sounds like a driver issue, but what do i do.. and weeman yeah its the first page up on google i've seen it i was just wonder if anyone has any ideas to what i can actually do i.e. load some sort of drivers or i don't know that why i am here lol

I had a problem like that and the mobo was bad. When i replaced it and reinstalled windows it didnt bsod.

well its just an ordinary out of the flyer computer hes got and its like a week old so i don't think thats it .. the computer itself works fine but it just bsod when i try and install xp

did this happen as you were trying to install xp. have you tried wiping the hard drive and trying to install again?

no i haven't tried wiping it first..you really think that will do the trick?

Try the HDD in another PC, and see if you get the same problem.

Remove all RAM, leave one RAM chip in there. That should do it.

when youre done, you can put in the others.

ive actually heard of people having problems solved in a similar manner as this, so definitely try this.

as far as wiping the hard drive, that depends, you said you got the bsod at setup, so the installation didnt start? if it didnt dont bother reformatting or anything. dose vista still work on it? i wouldnt wipe it unless you cant use vista anymore, it is always preferable to install on a clean hard drive, but its not likely thats the problem.

so ya try the ram thing, if that dosent work do what weeman said so you can determine if the problem is the hard drive or another component in the computer.

yeah vista still works fine thats why i didn't want to wipe the harddrive first.. i was going to just delete the partition once i got to the setup but i didn't make it that far.. thanks for the help i'll try the ram thing
