Broken R9 290

Hello,

So I received 2 stock r9 290's in the mail recently , and one of them works perfectly .

But the second one doesn't work correctly no matter what I do .

The problem :

Upon starting the pc with the bad 290 , I can get into the post screen ( so the gpu itself works ) , and if I exit it , I will get the windows loading fish ; but when the loading ends , the screen goes black , all fans power down as if the pc was into windows , and then all the fans power back up aggain and stay pinned at 100%.

The pc then needs a hard switch off .

What I have tried for the moment :

-Reaplying thermal paste

-putting it alone in the pc , as the bottom xfire card , as the top xfire card

I don't know how to boot into safe mode with my asus h97 plus ( god I hate uefi sometimes ) , and I don't see what could be wrong .

Any help is appreciated .

Pictures :D

The bios screen with the broken card ( "silent" bios )

Is it 2nd hand?

Sadly , yes :(

I'm hoping to get him to replace it , because it arrived screwed up .

If it's under warranty you can do the RMA yourself, unless, he bought it at a break-n-mortar store that's not available where you live.

He just need to awnser my email :D

What could the problem be ? Did he cook a component ?

I don't just was to send it back saying " Hurrr durr no working " , but if I have to , I'l do it.

You bought through Ebay or directly from him? I never bought anything from Ebay but I think Ebay has a policy about this, no?

porbably a x mineing card if your haveing problems with it send it back.

He told me it was a mining card :D

Gonna watercool them later on , but I'm wondering if I should just sell it at a loss and get a 280x trix.

You can try running them both. Run the display off the good card. Flash a new bios to the 'shit' card ~ or edit the existing bios. May need more idle voltage etc ~ RBE @ techpowerup is the best to use for editing.

It should be under warranty btw so RMA'ing it is the easiest thing to do.

Have already tried that :/ Won't boot with the card in the system at all , no matter where it is .

I'm gonna try and get Club 3D to replace it , although I don't have a cces to the receipt , and the guy who sold it to me on Ebay is not awnsering .

Does anyone know how to boot into safe mode in win 8.1 preview ?That might be a solution .

The threat of negative feedback should get you the receipt. That or file for a paypal claim. Ebay sorts things out pretty quick, well they have for me in the past.

Safe mode - hold shift & mash F8.

always ask if they've registered the hardware with vendor before buying it. ~> Yeah the chip or path-ways seems to be broken; You might try setting up oven for 400 and then put for 10-15min your card there. Then try again.

I did , the guy said it worked , and warned me about it .

I'm counting on the fact that he will be nice , witch I doubt.

That is why I got them for a stupidly low price .

black screen,  probably Vram issue.

some 290´s suffer from this, especialy the powercolor pcs.

But yeah to be honnest, if got them for a stupid low price, and one failed, i dont know what you paid for it. but then you can´t realy complain if the other one works great. You knew it where ex mining cards.

Is there a good way to fix this ?

Cook the gpu ? Or something else ?

300€ is what I payed for it , and that was when the 290's where on fire and going for 600 new.

I don't really want to loose 300 € , but I'm currently speaking with the guy that sold it to me , and he might rma it.

if everything fails try baking it as last resort. You can buy a set and check the connections pathways but i doubt you'll find anything gpu's became very advanced.

you could look if there is a bios update for your card availeble

Would there be a way to flash it without leaving the bios ?

It won't boot into windows ...

But yeah , that seems like a good idea.

You can boot your pc from linux or windows starting disk 95-98 it will boot to dos.

Now with : PICTURES !

That is the bios with the broken card. I managed to make it get into the bios only with single link dvi.
