The video above is what happened to my computer. I i was backing up a whole bunch of info onto my WD blue 1tB (166GB) and then the screen began to look checkered and then it got worse, so I recorded it. Near the end of the video the screen stayed blue checkered and the hard drive indicator lite just completely stopped flashing, and the computer mouse didn't even move (it was a bit in the video).
This isn't the first Time my hard drive stopped reading/writing. It also stopped working when installing fedora.
Is this because of fedora or my hard drive? Also, should I return it now or give it one last chance? (Got a 3 year warranty)
A HDD shouldn't be causing that. Do you have another computer that you can test the drive in.
On another note, how old is the system that this is in? Could be a chipset failure that's throwing the whole computer off (a better reasoning for why you are getting graphical errors rather than a halted system)
Does it occur after a certain amount of time or only when you start heavy read and writes?
My system is a core 2 duo and some Asus p5klm-cm (something like that) and a gtx 650. PSU is 600 watt corsair. Ram is 4gb of kingstone.
I do not have another system to test it in.
Could a chip set failure actually stop the HDD from reading and writing?
Both the times it has happened it was when I was reading/writing a lot of stuff. When gaming that never happens. The first time it happened the whole computer just froze, no graphical glitches.
Also, when I was my windows vista HDD it never does that.
Well the chipset does contain the HDD controller (unless the board uses a third party controller). I have recently experienced and worked upon multiple machines (one my own and friends) that are using the ICH7/10 southbridge and they have failed, causing what appears to be hard drive isseus. (except one where the HDD was failing too)
Is this when you are running in Fedora? If so check that Fedora is operating with the correct drivers for the chipset (G31/ICH7 for your board)
Yeah im running fedora, I dont know how to check if fedora is running the correct drivers. How do I check? And if the southbridge was failing, would the computer not turn on at all?
