Brand New Gaming/Main PC

Hi All, I'm looking to build a new gaming/main PC, which I might run VM's on occasionally, while not gaming. I'm looking for a good amount of speed, but I won't be gaming 24/7, and power consumption and efficiency is a concern.

  • Budget: 1500$ initially.
  • Location: USA $$$
  • Is there a retailer you prefer?: Newegg or Amazon.
  • Do you need or already have peripherals?: I have fans LOL.
  • What will you be using your Glorious computer for?: Gaming, watching twitch streams, just my new main PC.
  • Do you overclock or want to get into overclocking?: I'd like to run the 7700K at an even 5.0Ghz while gaming. Just cause it's a nice, round number.
  • Do you plan on going for custom water-cooling now, or in the future?:No, not again, not ever.
  • Operating System. Do you need a new one?: I'm just gonna use Win 10 Pro in trail mode to start off.

  • What kind of settings do you like or what FPS do you want to play at? I'd like to get into Overwatch, Battlefield 1, Star Wars Battlefield. I have KSP, Subnautica, and Space engineers, as well as World of Warships and STO.

  • What resolution will you be playing at? //or would like to play at. I'd like to run 1-3 1440p monitors at 60hz
  • What kind of games do you like to play?: Stratagy and casual. Total Annihilation, Homeworld 1&2, and Unreal Tournament are some of my favorite games.

Here's a link to the finished build, which will prob take a few months to complete: https://pcpartpicker.com/list/bVYzGf

I think I'd like a differant/bigger cooler, thou I really the Cryorig ones now. Also I'm not sure if the Asus Tuf mark one is overkill. I was also looking at the Asrock Taichi with 3 m.2 slots (one for OS, one for Steam games, one for non-steam games/VM's), But NVME drives are pricey, and IDK if the speed is worth it, especially if I only use that speed when gaming.
Also is the 1080 overkill for running four 1440p monitors while not gaming? Will I be able to use Nvidia surround on three of those monitors, is it even worth it?

Also I'd like dual NIC's, just because I like giving the second one to all the VM's to share. I just run chatbot/NPC and seedbox VM's, so nothing intense.

Do you need this build right this instant? If not, wait until third-party Ryzen benchmarks are out. If the first-party benchmarks are accurate, Ryzen will be cheaper and faster.

Anyways, I don't see anything particularly wrong about the build you linked. Aside from the CPU/motherboard with Ryzen, just a couple things really:

  • If you plan to overclock heavily I'd definitely shoot for the Cryorig R1 or a be quiet! Dark Rock Pro 3 to keep things cool.
  • Titanium power supplies are still a bit expensive. Gold or Platinum are still exceptional, and are typically much cheaper.
  • Get at least two sticks of RAM to leverage the dual channel capabilities.
  • This is more personal than anything, but for non-speed intensive storage (i.e. Word documents, pictures, music, etc) mechanical storage is still a plenty viable option. 2 TB drives can be had for $60 right now, and you simply can't beat that price for that amount of storage with solid state right now. SSDs are still beneficial for OS and games and whatnot that can use fast storage.

  • I only want to overclock while gaming, it's not a must. And I was looking at a larger cryorig heatsink, but I had to choose the one on pcpartpicker.
  • I also have a high power bill, so every little bit helps. I want to go with a widely used and reliable model thou, regardless of brand.
  • I am building this machine piecemeal, and will eventually have 64GB of ram.
  • I also have plenty of NAS storage and like 30 usb drives, so all my storage on the machine would be for OS and games.
