Need help please. I’m new to servers and not knowing much of anything server or anything above basic pc, I bought 4 new intel d3600 1.0tb u.2 drives thinking I could plop them on star tech pcie boards and have fast drives. In reading the specs of the drives and from what little I could find on google(after the fact), it looks at though anything I can find only really uses half of the speed as these drives are meant to talk to dual controllers and everything I find is single controller.
Could someone point me in a direction to make the best use of these drives(Wendell if you are reading this please help).
Yeah, the Intel PCIe 2x2 drives have a split PCIe interface for redundancy, so that losing a PCIe interface (let’s say one of the two CPUs in a dual socket server detonated) won’t bring down the entire thing, and it can limp along on two lanes from the other CPU.
But I think they default to a single PCIe x4 interface on systems which don’t request 2x2.
So I’d say you’re good to slap one of these on a PCIe U.2/2.5" adapter and go. I love those things. I don’t own one of these drives and have never worked with this particular model in person, so I’ll let someone else confirm everything I just said.
Thank you so much for answering. I’ve got a dual socket server I will be running this in, so what I’m reading then, I should be good. Only other question and I know Wendell had mentioned in a video he was going to do a test on these cards, is there a U.2 card you would recommend?
