I just got my new PC. It has 6700K with ASRock Z170 Extreme 4. Given the 5GHZ potential of the 7700K how bad was my purchase? I got a 212X cooler, so no extreme overclocking anyway, but I still feel bad about this.
Given the support ive had for getting a 7700k soon.... You are just fine, if not in a better situation.
There was virtually no improvement in IPC between the 6700K and 7700K so clock for clock performance is exactly the same, also if what I am hearing about the heat generation of the 7700K is true the 212X isn't nearly enough to get the chip to 5GHz to begin with.
imo 6700k is still a good CPU
It's not even worth upgrading from an i7 4790k, to the 7700k imo.
Depends on how you look at it. My coworker is currently planning on getting a 6700/k for his rig because he wants windows 8.1 support.
But what is he upgrading from?
first gen i5
There's been what, maybe a 10% performance increase since Ivy Bridge?
So yeah, you'd get like one whole extra FPS in a game or something if you're lucky.
(Going from 6700K to 7700K)
Like the i5 750? It's worth the upgrade for him, then.
Why does the specific model matter? You got "first gen i5", that should be enough.
You are probably fine.
Like almost all posts like this it depends on what you plan on doing with the system, which you haven't clarified.
Processing power wise nothing much has changed and the 5Ghz overclock probably won't be noticeable in most every day tasks. Only way I see you getting burned here is on price and maybe motherboard features.
I've known some people to think the i5 2500k to be the first gen i5. :/
it doesnt really matter much.
Might as well spring for a z270 board so you can at least do some 4k streaming on Netflix.
Pussy n00b.
I'm not being mean but if you are really in to PC's you have to make purchases with confidence because no matter what you buy or how much you spend... next week there will be something better.
(to make you feel like shit)
Get used to it. Never surrender. Never look back. No regrets ever.
I bought a Geforce 970 for $350 this year. Now they are $150.
No regrets because I needed the 970 when the price was $350.
Well seeing as how the 7700K is literally not an upgrade at all, I think its safe to say you should have waited for zen, which is out in like a month.
I still use Pentium M's and Phenom X4's. Kek.
I think you should be feel fine because there's basically no drastic change in IPC. If you wanted to brag about your brand spanking new Intel CPU that maybe can hit 5GHz you can't, but that's not a concern of yours, as far as I can see. Let the feeling fade away and enjoy the system you've put toghether with your hard earned money (unless if you stole and robbed to get it, than just rob some more and buy a 7700K).
A lot of responses, thank you. I didn't expect this.

Nothing special, no RGB, just a very fast computer. :)
PS. I feel better now.
Ugh, that lens flair .. what is this a Star Trek film?
Nice build though. :)
Yeah nothing to feel bad about really.
The 6700K and the 7700K are still the fasted desktop cpu´s,
in terms of per core performance and ipc on the market today.
Zen isnt going to change that most likely.
