If I upgrade my CPU, will I gain FPS? If so, will it be substantial?
I am looking at upgrading to the Ryzen 9 5950X.
Thoughts?
Current specs:
Ryzen 7 3700X
MSI 4080 GPU
G.Skill Ripjaws 32 GB 3200Mhz RAM
WD_BLACK 2TB m.2 SSD

For gaming, 5800x3D is the way to go.
Yes, but the FPS increase will be marginal and probably in the single digits. A question you should ask yourself is if you’re happy with the FPS you’re currently getting? If the answer is yes, then stay the course.
Depends entirely on the game.
Depends entirely on the game.
What resolution are you playing at and how many FPS (= Hz) can your monitor handle?
5k vs 3k series is, iirc/afaik, typically 15~20% faster at the same clocks, and some 15~20% higher clocks, for maybe up to a 30% performance increase in *some *CPU limited situations in gaming.
A select few theoretical future games may benefit further from the 100% increase in core/thread count, but it’s unlikely that this will be a meaningful improvement and likely won’t exceed the additional up to 30~50% from the added cache on the 5800x3D, which as previously mentioned, is the way to go for gaming(and some productivity) on the AM4 platform.
I don’t personally believe either is worth the investment at this time, but I also don’t think a 4080 is worth it either, so ymmv. In some cases you may even see up to a 70% improvement or more from 5800x3D over 3700x. If you find the price of the 5800x3D reasonable for a fairly sizeable performance jump that is very similar to the difference between 5800x3D and 7800x3D, it may be worth it to you.
