I turned on my computer this morning.. And all I got was a mouse on a black screen. I had no idea what was wrong. I had to think about it for about ten minutes before hitting CTRL+ALT+DEL, opening Task Manager, and running 'explorer.exe'...
Anyone have any idea what could have caused this? Is this a sign that my hard drive is about to die?
Black screen? Did it also happen to say Windows is not genuine? That's usually the only time that a black screen shows with nothing else. Unless you or some malicious software went doing things you shouldn't have.
It is most likely due to a damaged registry. On older version of Windows there was the system.ini file that contained the shell used upon boot up sequence. Now the shell entries are located in the registry as of XP and later I believe. I only use Windows to play games so I'm not that familiar with the registry but you can try this.
I urge you to back up your system or create a restore point or even try going back to a previous restore point in which your system worked. This is a last resort perhaps:
Press: Ctrl + Shift + Esc
Then file new task, type regedit
Go to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\Image Execution Options\
In this list there will be a entry explorer.exe, right click on it and export it. On the right hand side delete the "debugger" key.
Please don't blame me if you screw up your registry, like I said create a restore point and pay attention when you're fooling around in there. xD
It's Windows 7. It's genuine (came pre-installed.) I re-booted my computer and it booted up just fine.. I'm not sure what may have happened. I do know that every time i boot up, my BIOS tells me that my hard drive is in danger of failing. I'm replacing it once I get the cash.
happened all the time with school computers. might be the hard drive, but if i had to take a guess, something with active directory fucking up / corrupt registry entry. if its a one time thing, dont worry about it.
Could be corrupt registry entry, might just be explorer.exe that's screwed up. The latter happened to me so I downloaded explorer.exe and replaced the corrupt one with it and everything was fine after that.
