Bootable Drives on Sun Server 4X-2

Hey guys I have a pair of Sun Servers 4X-2 servers. I am having issues with getting the bios to boot from the raid card, so I put an NVMe drive on a PCIe adapter in and the bios does not see it. When I boot off of an Ubuntu live USB it sees the NVMe drive but can’t mount it.

Other than running off USB drives, or setting up a PXE boot server, what drives can I use with this?

Thank you in advance.

Hey, OP here, I ended up fixing the issue by replacing the raid card. Not sure why it died but as soon as I swapped it, it started working normally. Also looks like PCIE boot is not supported with an add in card (PCIE to NVMe) in case anyone was wondering.

That makes sense. My first (unhelpful) guess would have been sun decided not to support the card and thus it doesn’t work, I know oracle can be really picky with what hardware you’re allowed to interface with, but maybe that’s advice more specific to their Sparc servers.

Not the X86 servers, the X4-2s are just really old, do not support UEFI booting but other than that they aren’t pickier than your Lenovo or HP server from that time …
I have a pair of them repurposed from an Exadata rack running oVirt with storage over the dual 40Gbit infiniband fabric … standard centos linux running everything , infiniband card included … they came with half a terabyte of RAM, each
