Hey, just want to know if there is any recommendation for books you guys recommend. I love the series and the show. I like Tolkien's books if that gives more of an idea. Thank you for your time.
- The Silmarillion - J.R.R. Tolkien
- The Magician - Raymond E. Feist
- The Belgariad - David Eddings
The Dragon Lance series by Tracy Hickman and Margret Weiss is fantastic:
- Dragons of Autumn Twilight.
- Dragons of Winter Night.
- Dragons of Spring Dawning.
I highly recommend them. They are a bit more magic-heavy than A Song of Ice and Fire, though.
I'm not sure if I would put The Belgariad or the Silmarillion in the same category. The Belgariad has good dialogue, but I never finished it, lol.
Anyway, you need grey characters... none of the good vs evil nonsense.
Check out Malazan, The First Law Trilogy (I am about to read it), Gormenghast, Sword of Shadows (it is not as good, but interesting)... there must be others.
Thank you Logan for the reply, I agree with you on the good vs evil. If I wanted that I would go read Brothers Grimm or Perrault on fairy tales (there are many others). I already heard great things about the The First Law Trilogy and have that on my list. I will have to look into Sword of Shadows. Thanks Logan for the recommendations, and keep those videos coming!
A Song of Ice and Fire and the books I recommended still have similar themes: transformation, companionship, journey, etc. And they all use magic in an interesting way rather than simply providing a solution to impossible problems like a lot of fantasy novels rely on.
The good vs. evil trope if done right can be epic, it's not always nonsense.
Are there fantasy (or sci-fi) books that have similar storytelling to ASOIAF? I am interested in large worlds with thought-out history, multiple POVs, large numbers of characters and as little plot armor as possible.
Above mentioned traits in ASOIAF make me feel that the imaginary world is developing on it's own as opposed to revolving around the protagonist and being pushed by author in any direction he desires.
Try Brent Weeks' Novels they have that dark and gritty feeling that is portrayed in Martin's work and the overtones in magic your looking for as well.
Night Angel Trilogy I believe is his first books, published by Orbit if I recall.
