Blade server motherboards

Howdy people,

I got my hands on a blade server board for funzies – It’s an Asus X99-h/IPMI.
I’d like to ask: does anyone have any experience with this board and knows how to power on a blade server motherboard like this one for quick testing and validation?

Many thanks,

Y

I should clarify: I did connect all the power connectors to the board, but it doesn’t power on when I press the panel power button. I’m wondering if I’m missing something here (e.g., the backplane pins need to be shorted or something).

Looks a bit like a melon, IMO. Here’s something I found, it appears you’re not the only one:

Having said that, it seems it has 2 EATX power sockets (20 pin each) so find a PSU for that and you should at least get it powered up w/o a CPU/RAM via the IPMI port. That allows you to investigate the hardware onboard.

HTH!

Hi,

Thanks for your reply.
I used 2 PSUs with one 20 pin connector each, an E-5 2660 V3 Xeon with an Arctic Freezer i30 CO cooler and 8GB of corsair memory. It doesn’t power on! Any ideas?

Thanks!

I’m afraid not. Apart from my earlier suggestion of exploring the system via IPMI, it should have a method to boot it remotely. But only if all requirements are fulfilled and I have no idea what they are.

PS: in case you don’t know: IPMI is the onboard management system, it works independently from the main system and should power up when power is connected. You should be able to access it via the IPMI port, i.e. the network. Give it a few minutes after powering up, 5 mins should usually be enough to be able to connect.

Thanks Dutch Master. I know what an IPMI is, I have many servers in service.
I just haven’t had any experience with blade boards.
The thing gets no power, hence I can’t access any IPMI services.

Stumbled upon that too. Not much help there, hence why I’m asking on level1techs.

Got this working. For the record, it requires an enterprise PSU and the ASUS power board to go with it. It also needs the smart psu monitoring cables connected.

These weird boards are used by proprietary, high-frequency trading servers, such as the Ciara ORION HF330-G3.

I finally got life into mine today.
Using i7-5820k
16gb hypertec ddr4
Original PSU .

Looks complete mess at the moment with wrong fans but it works

If you plan to use without IPMI you will need a pci riser as the GPU will be blocked buy some small capacitors

a

Indeed mine was also from the same outlet Slow going to get information from asus they have helped to some extent and more information maybe on the way regarding the pinouts enable disabled as not all are clearly marked.

Noice! Well done Scififreaks. I’m curious: are you using an original Asus Power distribution board? If not, what are you using that is compatible? I’m looking to source a spare.

EDIT: I can see in the pictures that the power distribution board is Asus-branded.

Good morning i puchased the psu and got the pdb with it from [Compuware Cpr-1621-1M21 www. ebay. co. uk
/ itm/325552558872

The distribution board is not labled very well on g oogle
But my photos may help

Morning!
I have one of these boards too. Have you connected SATA power to it?

Not yet i have nvme .
cd player via usb.
Working slowly on this board.

I have an nvme on mine too. You mentioned Asus support helped a little bit. What help were they able to provide?

This pci bracket was sent which was a bonus.

I didn’t get black cables for these cables only the 20 pin atx which has the pmbus gpu and atx12v cbles all running of the 20 pin.

First they referenced the x99 ws/ipmi
For same chipset first they mentioned type of ram and cpu which i also found in the link they directly linked me to an updated page that keeps resetting so refreshing to continue download.

Comparison of old and new look identically the same except the Chinese part but no further information in that manual.

The main list is of importance of compatible cpu gpu ram network adapters ssd sata drives.

Unofficial but works Amd Firepro V5900

Sorry for delay iwas editing the compatability list.

I also tried desktop atx didn’t work. They use server psu layouts
This pic will show 12v cables

I hope this helps I have used up my 3 replies apparently that’s why ive added to this post.

Hi, I made the same observation in my earlier posts in this thread: it needs a server PSU with the Asus power board and the SMART sense connected to start. Indeed, a desktop PSU won’t work.

Now I’m looking for a compatible rackmountable case for this board. Sourcing an original case doesn’t seem feasible at this time, so if anyone finds one that can house this board, please let me know.
