I'm new to PC building and I just finished building my PC. I turned it on and I was directed to the BIOS. I went to storage configuration and it says NOT DETECTED for all of the SATA sections. I think I've plugged in the cables for the optical drive and hard drive wrong. I'm not good with the hardware terms, but I know that I have to use the medium sized flat cable, think it's called the SATA power cable and the shorter flat one, think its called the SATA data cable. But I don't know how to correctly set it up for the optical drive and hardware drive. Can you guys tell me what would be the correct way to plug the cables for optical drive and hard drive? The mobo doesn't tell me how to setup the optical drives and hard drive, or where to plug the SATA power and data cables. Can you tell me how to do that? If all goes wrong I'll just report back here. Your help is highly appreciated.
Motherboard: ASRock Z77 Extreme4 ATX LGA1155 Motherboard
Optical Drive: Lite-On iHAS124-04 DVD/CD Writer
Storage: Seagate Barracuda Green 1.5TB 3.5" 5900RPM Internal Hard Drive (Will be my primary storage)
SATA and its power connector can only go in one way due to a notch on one end. Can you have a closer inspection that everything is plugged up correctly? I know tracing cable by cable to find the culprit is a pain in an ass/arse (:3), but usually that's what you should do before anything else. Report back after you did that.
You said storage drive so only suggestion I can make is if you have the OS already installed on another hard drive. Right click Computer, click Manage, Disk Management, and then find the hard drive there. You may need to format the hard drive correctly if it's a bare drive so it can be used, file system ntsf. Even if the OS isn't on the computer you can plug that hard drive into another desktop and do this, then return it back to the system and try it then.
I've actually checked the cables like 7 times. They're all plugged up correctly except the hard drive and optical drive. I didn't know what to do because I was following newegg's tutorial and got lost when they fast forwarded the video, so I think I messed up on the optical and hard drive. But weird thing is that the optical drive seems to be working because I tried pressed on the button and it worked. But the BIOS couldn't detect the SATA hard drive.
Okay tell me if I did my cables correctly. I don't have an OS installed on another hard drive.
- I plugged the SATA power cable to PSU, then plugged it into optical drive. Then with the same SATA power cable I plugged it into the hard drive.
-For the SATA data cable, the small one, I plugged it into the optical drive and for the other end of the data cable I plugged it into the hard drive. I think I did it wrong.
The mobo doesn't tell me how to setup the optical drives and hard drive, or where to plug the SATA power and data cables. Can you tell me how to do that? If all goes wrong I'll just report back here.
ok, i see what you problem is, it sounds to me like you hooked the sata data cable from your hdd to your optical. the sata data cable need to go from each drive to the motherboard sata ports, your drives should not be connected to each other by data cables

So the optical drive is directly connected to the hard drive?
The optical drive has to be connected to the motherboard and so does the hard drive. That is 100% sure the issue at hand here bud, all you gave to do is run your "sata data cable" from the hard drive to the motherboard. Same for the disc drive. Sorry it took me awhile to respond I just woke up because I was up until like 8am last night lol
It's fine. You're doing the community a favor and that's very nice of you already. Yeah thanks for clearing that up. I'm thinking I have to plug it into the first one on the motherboard. When I go home I'll do that and see how everything goes.\
Yeah that's exactly what I did :(
Yep no problem, if you can't get it working let me know, I'll get you in google+ with the guys and we can walk you through it live!
