‘Bionic spine’ brain interface implant human trials in 2017

@Wendell @DeusQain your dream of wetware just got one, very real, step closer.

Dubbed the ‘Bionic spine’, this 30mm brain interface could enable paralysed patients to walk using subconscious thoughts alone.

The device will be implanted in three patients at the Royal Melbourne hospital spinal cord unit in Victoria, Australia, via a small incision at the back of the skull & then maneuvered via a catheter through a blood vessel into place atop the motor cortex.

Electrodes on the interface will trasnmit signals from the motor cortex to a device implanted in the patient’s shoulder.

This is a major step beyond old methods that required the skull to be opened in a procedure known as craniotomy in order to get the implant in.
