Big Linux Phone - Fast enough to run stuff in browser when no apps

Hi,
i search for an +6 inch Phablet with Linux as OS. It has to be fast (so no Yolla for example) because i need to run stuff in the browser if there are no apps under Linux.

I really like the Nexus 6 from Moto but it is Andro and i need a device that doesn't load stuff up to Google, Apple, MS or what ever. It has to do with the company i work for, they really don't like work related notices or mails somewhere in the cloud or such things. So if i would buy an Andro i couldn't use it for typing ideas down and such things.
At the moment i have a Nokia N9 with MeGoo but Nokia was very stupid and canceled the OS, and the N9 is old now and to slow.

Has somebody an idea, i find it really difficult to find such a device i have to say. :(

Linux or GNU/Linux? Android is a Linux OS.

The Nexus 6 can be flashed with whatever OS it supports, this doesnt haven't to include google apps. They also wouldn't get your work related notices... unless your work is using google, apple, or microsoft (which many do) for their mail, etc.

The only phone im aware that meets your no company on here criteria is probably the Neo 900 http://neo900.org/
Which doesnt fit your needs as its not 6"+. Maybe the Jolla phone, but its not 6"+ either.

Hi,
yes Andro is Linux but Andro is not allowed because it can upload data without the user can notice it for example.
The Yolla and the Neo900 are to slow sadly, because i search for something that secure as an OS.
Do you know a good page where i can see which Oses i can put on which phones? Because if i can run Ubuntu Phone on a Nexus 6 this might be the way to go for me. Sorry that i ask such noob questions but i have Mint for only 3 month as a dualboot now, so the Linux stuff is still very new to me.

Is BlackBerry a save OS?

There is no 6" GNU Linux phone that exist that meets your requirements. Meizu MX4 is 5.5" and has an Ubunutu version but is not available everywhere.

You can buy certain phablets install AOSP (Android Open Source Project) Then side load Firefox for browser and FDroid as your apstore.

Find a couple of 6" phones and check if it has an unlocked bootloader. Then see if there is an AOSP rom for it or build your own. Use google and XDA to check.

Firefox OS is pretty garbage I have used it on both native and ported devices.

Jolla phone is a bit old at this point but there is an installer for it on the Nexus 5 and 4 it runs very well on both.

You can as stated install AOSP and lock it down to what ever extent you like. You don't have to keep the stock version.

BlackBerry is also moving to Android or at least heavily in that direction.

i thought about the nexus 5 with jolla a bit i think the nexus 5 is still a bit slow to do everything from the browser, and jolla still misses a lot of apps, hmmm...
Quite hard to find a compelling solution. ^^

I think if there is a way to go with CyanogenMod that would be nice. Do i understand it right, that i have the option in CyanogenMod to forbid apps sending infos out. It is important for me to write notes down that don't get uploaded in the Internet and that i can use a calendar and a mail program that way too. Has someone an idea if CyanogenMod is able to do so?
And if so is the 1+2 a good phone in your eyes? Or is it possible to go with the nexus 6 with CyanogenMod without bumps in everyday use?

You could just as easily use CyanogenMod for your uses. It doesn't come with Gapps natively so it's not uploading anything iirc

Is there any way you can turn off the auto sync option?? And like @SolitaryOwlet said CyanogenMod would be a good alternative. CM supports a lot of phones and is the best known third party ROM XDA should have lots of documentation for any phone you would like to have. I started to do some findings and found this https://fsfe.org/campaigns/android/liberate.en.html there seems to be a kinda of cult out there for getting Google out of your privacy, and a ROM I haven't heard of called Replicant.

Its not a cult its a dream !

Id wager there are many people who would like a Linux alternative for a smart phone even if they didn’t actually run any 'apps' just ARM applications. However the The idea of an x86 phablet with Linux and proper GPS calling+text keeps me dreaming, that would be fairly awesome if it could run counter strike / half life and things such as doom aswell as other funky Linux stuff.

Sorry that i reply so late, i still read into the rom-flashing-thing.
I saw that the 1+2 has a bad OS (Oxygen), so for me now the idea to flash a nexus 6 and put CM on it seams the way to go. But i still have to read into this.
I wonder
- if my Linux Mint PC makes it easier to talk to a Andro device (only found tutorials for win PC's jet with nexus 6)?
- If i can use a locked device i buy with a contract, i wonder too?
- If CM is stable i wonder, never had a device with CM running, does it work for you guys?
- Is there other stuff i should know if i plan to flash a nexus6? (Like i said i am kind of new to Linux and all that, installing my Nvidia-drivers under Mint was a challenge for me to be honest.
- Is there a good Forum or side i can get good help if i get stuck? Just to be on the save side.

You can install it in a chroot, but if you're brave and comfortable writing firmware you could implement it yourself.
If I was you I'd stick with the chroot...

XDA forums for what ever phone you get. They will have all the info down to the coding level so should be able to help you secure a phone.

Jolla was our last chance to truly get away from Android/Google and they failed, I didnt have any hope for Ubuntu Phone. I still don't in all honesty.

In my opinion the Nexus line is the most open phone you're probably going to get. And when I say open as in, the phone that can be rooted quickly and you have about 30 ROMs to choose from on XDA. No other phone really has that much support.

As for people trying to secure their privacy on Google. Tech Savy People are trying to remove everything but the play store. WHICH IS possible now especially on Cyanogenmod to get a clean and minimal OS. Which is sort of simple to do now. You can go full on Open Source and remove google entirely from android for example there's the Open Source app store F-Store (I believe it's called) which you can install, but it doesn't compare to the play store. But removing google entirely on android is possible though a lot of people don't really do it, you're going to end up going back to google for at LEAST one thing.

Thanks for all the infos and help.
I need some time to read it all.
I now ordered the Nexus 6 from Motorola and will try to put CM on.
It is hard to life without Google Apps that is for sure. I play with the Idea to use the Nexus private and the N9 as a notice block. Hmmm
If only i can be sure to at least have a notice app and a mail app, Google can not spy on under CM, that would be very helpful. Scans Google everything, when i install the Google Apps?

I have a Nexus 7 and the only Google related things I have is, Chrome, the Play Store and Gmail. everything else is not on my device. no maps, no hangouts, no Google Now, nothing. not even the record your voice app.

CM for me too only have YouTube and PlayStore.

On stability if you have a stable release for the device then yes. Nightlies can be flaky. Like SD cards don't work right on the LG G4

oh definitely. I'm running CM13 right now. in the beginning. it was horrible. Wi-Fi would shut off at random moments, would crash from time to time. and that's about it. some of the issues I've had in the past have slowly been fixed.

I tried to buy the Nexus6 from Motorola to put CM on it but it was sold out.
After thinking about it a while now, i maybe buy a Meizu PRO 5 ubuntu edition now.
It seams to have the power to run everything i need in the browser. And in Hamburg we now have free WiFi in public transit.
Thx for your insides about CM.

Yeah!! i am totally agree with kat post.
