Best software for capturing and streaming?

Hey everyone! So I have a youtube channel where I do a lot of video game commentaries and let's plays, but almost exclusively console.  I recently built a pretty high power computer so I want to start doing more on the PC side of things.  I want to be able to capture footage for single videos and do some streaming.  I have heard XSplit was the best program for streaming currently, so I was going to try that, but I wanted some input on it aswell.  Also, what about for capturing the videos? Is the capture quality good on XSplit, or should I go with a different piece of software? I was thinking Dxtory, as I have heard a lot about it, but I wanted to hear your guy's thoughts.  Thanks again everyone!

actually, open broadcasting software is just as good as xsplit, and it's free. xsplit requires subscription, I'm not sure what the subscription period is tho...

quality is the same as what you see, although, if you're not partnered with twitch, they lower the res to 480p

as for recording, I use fraps. I've tried dxtory, but I never can get it to record decently. the video is always stuttery, no matter what I try. fraps requires alot of hard drive space, as it records uncompressed video.

whether you use fraps or dxtory, you will need a video editor. I personally ... aquired... sony vegas pro 12, after trying open source editors. it's easy to use, and supports both CUDA and opencl.

I'll check out open broadcasting.

How would you compare the features in FRAPs and Dxtory? I basically just want the highest quality and best performance available.

And thanks, I'm actually fine on video editors however! I use Adobe Premiere Pro CS6.  I already have a decent channel, I just wanted to branch out to PC gaming.  Thanks man!

FRAPS is really easy to use, once you have the settings right. my first couple of recordings didn't have sound, but I just had to change a setting or two. good thing about fraps is that everyone and their uncle uses it for recording gameplay, so chances are, someone else has had the same problem, and posted how to fix it.

also, with fraps, you can tell it to split the files every 5 gigs, roughly 10 minutes each. makes it easier if you want to leave out a segment or something

some people swear by dxtory, but i've had nothing but problems. my gameplay runs fine, but the recording ends up being like 5 fps, on the same rig where I get 60 fps while using fraps.

dxtory actually records bigger files than fraps, but it's supposed to record up to 5 channels audio, and has more codecs. supposedly more options as well,.

fraps just... works... dxtory requires fnaegling to work right, and i've heard it doesn't work with some games.

dxtory also requires SSD-level hard drive write speed to record 1080p 60 fps.

"When simply calculating by the bit rate of RGB24.

Width * Height * 3 * fps = Necessary storage speed
1728 * 972 * 3 * 60 = 302330880 byte/sec (about 302MB/sec)

About 30fps is 150MB/sec"

I tried a short recording to a ramdisk, and still got terrible lag...

I think fraps is probably the best option.

i would stay away from dxtory. it's just not very good under the hood... requires insane hdd speeds, and support is terrible.

Ah, sounds good.  What about Open Broadcaster? I have the program and a Twitch.TV account, but other than that I have no idea what I'm doing.  Any good tutorials?

dxtory works fine if you dont use the dxtory codec, you want the lagarith lossless codec. I record with dxtory and us a 7200 rpm drive and can record 1080p no problem, theres no need to do 60fps as youtube cuts you to 30. So i record just above that at 40 just to stay above 30 all the time, and the adobe broadcaster works fine for streaming to twitch, theres a link on twitch to the abobe and they give you the config file to set it to stream to your channel

still, support for dxtory is the worst i've ever seen. their forums aren't even in english. pretty much all they say for issues is that you need to have an ssd or raid array to record. I tried a ramdisk, which, at 10666⅔ MB/s write speed, is 13.9 times faster than an ssd on a sata 6gb/s bus.

MSI Afterburner is the best of all softwares if you are only recording for Youtube (not live)

I have used all others, and Afterburner has the best recorder..

I use a wd blue drive and have no stutters at all while recoding at 1080p, even if i record at 60 fps so i can slow some of it down without chops, you just have to use the correct codec, with the dxtory codec i record at 5 fps, with the lagarith lossless codec i can record as high as the frames im getting on a game,
