Best PC maintenance software

I would like some adive on what PC maintenance software I should use. I heard a lot good things about ccleaner and Auslogic BoostSpeed but I would like some advice from you guys.

What I would like the software to do is defrag my computer and to clean it up (registery and temp files and stuff)
I don't mind using multiple programs.

CCleaner rules. I use it monthly. Wiping free space is my favorite tool it has. I also suggest Auslogics disk defrag. Defragging is always important. Unless you're using an SSD.

Ccleaner is good, imo bleach bit is probubly the best, but it does not scan the registry, so i use ccleaner for registry stuff, and bleach bit for 'cleaning' junk data.

The latest version of BoostSpeed really screws up my computer when i use the registry cleaning tool. Bizarre. The rest of the utilites it comes with do their jobs well though.

ccleaner for registry, defraggler works better than the stock one, but there may be better, if you have multiple HDDs, then take off the virtual memory it and put 200MB min and 768 max for any additional drive but keep your boot drive clear of one

also take a look at your start up processes in either ccleaner or msconfig, for things you really don't need

I like to use Auslogics Boostspeed, did a nice job for me

I just got ccleaner today. Would fixing all selected problems in Registry be a good thing or can it screw up my system?

never caused any trouble for me. you can do a backup... it will promt you when you click scan. Just do that and you are all good.

agreed with everyone CCLEANER FTW

  • Revo uninstaller is a must for uninstalling any software, will nuke the software from your computer and registry. | Website
  • MSconfig (built into windows) is a powerful tool too, I only allow very few services boot access, in addition I deny most DRM services the ability to start. More info below.
  • Ccleaner before every shutdown, select every option except for wipe free space. | Website
  • defragler for degragging. | Website
  • Imgburn for any iso needs. | Website
  • Keepass 2 for passwords database needs. | Website

Doing these things has kept my computers in pristine shape for years.

Opening the run prompt (Windows Key + R) and entering 'msconfig' will open Microsoft's built in boot configuration tool. From here you can configure which services and programs will start when you turn on your computer.

Here is what I recommend:

  1. Never touch the 'General' or 'Boot' Tabs, these will be configured automatically by changing some of the other options that I talk about below.
  2. Enter the 'Services' Tab, and check the box to 'Hide all Microsoft Services', never close any Microsoft services, you will regret it.
  3. Remove any updaters (Adobe Updater, Google Updater, Skype Updater, Etc), don't remove Steam client service if you like having steam working. Also, don't remove things like Creative audio service, or other audio drivers you might have installed, not to mention antivirus and other must have software.
  4. Go into the 'Startup' Tab and do the same thing here, remove updaters, anoying software, and other things you do not want booting.

Just a note, Flexnet licensing service is anoying DRM, however, in order for some software like photoshop to even start, it needs to be on. (Photoshop should automatically start it if it is not running, however unchecking these boxes disables the service,) To fix this, you have to open your services manager, and find Flexnet, then open its properties and change it to 'Manual' instead of Disabled / Automatic. You can get to this manager by searching for 'Services' in the superbar.

Thanks for the 'Hide all Microsoft Services' advice, never noticed it before.
I will give Revo uninstaller and defragler a try (already using the other software you mentioned).

Thanks for the advice guys,

using CCleaner for registery needs, looking at defraggler and Auslogics for defragging and will try out bleach soon.
I used to use Advanced SystemCare for cleaning and defragging but it really turned into bloatware.

Signed for CCleaner, used it many times for registry and never had an issue, it's ability to disable startup programs is handy, faster than doing it manually.
