Best OS for a NAS?

I just got an old PC from a friend that I want to use as a nas. It’s got 4GB of ram a Core 2 Quad (I think it’s a Q8200). I wanted to use FreeNAS at first but I read that it requires at 8GB of ram to actually work properly (because of ZFS and shit). As of right now I’m only running one hdd but there are more to come. What would be a good OS for a good, basic nas?

The answer is still going to be FreeNAS. RAM is cheap, if you're investing money into hard drives, there's really no excuse to not invest in additional RAM so you can properly run freeNAS. Both my remote and local NAS run on freeNAS.

well, you could run ubuntu core with samba and have a graphical front end with file zilla

You could go to turnkeylinux.com and grab their NAS stack. I have never used it, but I have used their LAMP stack and I found it to be pretty good.

Well you could try the NAS stack at turnkeylinux.com.

You could try open media vault or rocstore
