I would recommend the Acer C720 ChromeBook.
+1 on a chromebook, specifically the Acer C720. If you can find a C710 they are worth every penny and usually cheap/refurbished. Picked up my C710 refurbished for cheap, swapped out the slow 320GB HDD for a 120GB SSD and doubled the RAM. It's an awesome and surprisingly capable machine and you can do more with chromeOS than most people realize.
The cool thing about the Acers is that you can upgrade the storage and RAM, where as most of the others are stuck with 16GB SSDs and only 2GB RAM.
Or a second hand Think-pad T400 or T410 those run well with Win7 or any Linux distro you fancy
Chrome OS isn't versatile enough if used as primary computer. Although you can replace it with Linux, it's not terribly difficult but it does require you read and follow a tutorial.
