I was wondering what you guys think it the best pair of gaming headphones. I know the Astro A40's are nice but with a price tag of $240... I could upgrade my GPU with that cash. What do you think?
When you need good headphones for anything, you first buy good headphones and then decide how you want your mic. The easiest way is to use tabletop one and I have no idea why it is not a popular solution. Works perfectly fine even if it's half a meter away from you.
Now if you don't want a tabletop one, you can either get a modmic or make your own.
Gaming headsets are unreliable and overpriced. Never buy them.
As an example (you didn't name your budget), I'd say something like Sennheiser HD 518.
They have overall good sound for the price, although they are on a bassy side.
They are open which means that it's easier to wear them for many hours straight.
They are light.
(They also have detachable cable which makes them more reliable and allows to use them outdoors easily just by obtaining a shorter cable)
If you don't like bassy sound of HD 518's, there are HD 558 which have a balanced and more clear sound. Although they are more expensive.
If you need to be isolated from sounds from outside or you don't want to disturb people by sound from your headphones, you need closed ones. But they make your ears sweat and are harder to wear for a long time. Decision is yours.
Also, buying headphones without trying them is a gamble. I recommend always listening to them before buying because you might not like the frequency response or they may not fit your head/ears confortably. This is very subjective and headphones being good does not guarantee that you'll like them.
I'll have to disagree on the open ears being more comfortable. I prefer the big cans, my ears fit inside them and I don't sweat ( my ears don't anyways). I will have to agree with you on trying out headphones before buying them though. Anything sound related is subjective to the person who is listeing to them.
