Common Sense 2014 is really good.

I would recommend avast...just whatever you do stay away from that Norton bull crap.

I use Malwarebytes and Search&destroy... Also CCleaner/ATFCleaner to clean cookies and caches and whatnot

Avast or AVG for anti-virus

Malwarebytes

CCleaner, for cleaning tools.

For your browser get popup blockers/adblockers.

Its not just one program but a handful with common sense.

MSE, it's not annoying, it's free, doesn't suck up all your resources, asks you to click the scan button instead of doing while in the middle of a gaming session, oh and it's from Microsoft, the people that make Windows.

 

Also like 2bdkid said, (un)common sense. Download carefully and make sure it comes from a safe place.

For me its Malwarebytes since I tend to do dark deeds and Ccleaner portable since you do not want to see what I have been browsing and the occasional registry cleaning if i want something completely gone ! If you don't do any dark deeds I just like to have CCleaner handy on any computers that I use and Common Sense 2015 Edition 2014 is kinda outdated keep sharp!

I use avira as its free and has one of the highest detection rates in real world tests. And I also use malwarebytes for the ocassional scan.
