Today I received a Hitachi 2tb drive(deskstar 7k2000) as a gift (bought on amazon) that sadly turned out to be defective (it made beeping sounds every 5 seconds and would not be recognized by the computer). I chose the hitachi because it seems they are very reliable and cheap based on the blackblaze results. After looking deeper, it seems that used units are being sold as new on amazon. link: http://www.amazon.com/HITACHI-Deskstar-7200RPM-Internal-Desktop/dp/B00QMQXSH8/ref=sr_1_8?s=pc&ie=UTF8&qid=1451080441&sr=1-8&keywords=2+tb+hard+drive Now I was wondering whether the community thinks I should just buy another one for the same price or spend a little more and get a seagate for about $70(usd). If it would be best to try out the hitachi again, should it be on amazon or somewhere else like newegg? Thanks for any help in advance.
Just buy another. We've used the same ones in hundreds of computers. Only got a few defective ones.
Aright, sweet. They really seem to have insane price/performance ratio.
well, at my hardware shop of choice all 2 tb drives have rma rates <1%
you might get told that brand x is not reliable becsaue someone had a zillion drives fail in a row but it doesnt matter.
In your case I would just claim the waratny and have your drive be replaced.
I never had a drive fail on me (even a wd caviar blue which i droped from the height of a mid tower pc, it made strange sounds when shaking but it still worked, I used it to transport some steam games to my cousin)
Last drives i bought was seagate desktop 2 tb because you dont get it any cheaper in germany.
I use it for about a year now.
You have no idea how many customers say "I've never had a hard drive fail before, what made it fail?" I've seen at least a few hundred fail since I've been in the industry. Hitachi/HGST do have the most reliable ones currently.
on sale for $75 right now
