looking for a new processor, but not sure which one to go to. already have a couple 8350 based systems, so looking for an intel processor. something i can use in an lg 1150 motherboard. it currently has an intel i7 2600 in the motherboard, i just want to upgrade it a bit. pretty much only use this system for gaming (8gig of ram, windforce gtx 660) so just want something better, without spending $300 for a 4700 series. any ideas?
If you wish to OC: 4790k
If you do not wish to OC: Xeon 1231v3
If you do wish to OC but you're reluctant to spend a lot on a 4790k: 4690k, however the 1231v3 already has similar performance even with the 4690k at 4.5-4.6GHz and it even edges out the 4690k in heavily threaded games.
My personal choice/preference lies with the 1231v3 or the 4790k.
Indeed, as @Streetguru just mentioned. You have a socket 1155 motherboard. You will also need to buy a new motherboard if you want to use something like a 4790k. The best you can upgrade to (This is after a bios update if you do not have a new enough bios yet) is a 3770k which is pointless. Just hold your upgrade until skylake is released.
Just a note though, I highly recommend not upgrading just yet. Wait for skylake to release and THEN upgrade. Significantly higher IPC and smaller manufacturing process.
Isn't the 2600 an 1155 socket chip? Or did you like already have an 1150 motherboard?
yeah its an 1155 socket. mis-typed lol
Then ya like the other dude said, no point in upgrading that, just wait for skylake unless you're going to go 2011-v3 or something.
Your 8350 system is just fine. Just wait for Skylake or Zen. Upgrade the GPU, add an SSD, look for deals on DDR4, and if you really can't wait get an AsRock X99 Extreme 3 for $190 and you'd end up spending $100 or so more than a maxed out 1150 build which I can nearly garuntee will out an 1151 build.
Keep using your i7 2600 & buy a new gpu. $300 - 290x, gtx970 - difference will be like night & day compared to a gtx660.
Upgrading to a new i5/i7 would be a big waste of cash imho.
