Best antivirus for 2009?

So I've had this computer for about 6 months now and haven't installed an antivirus yet. I haven't noticed any problems so far, I'm usually good at avoiding sites with malware on them, google chrome even blocks them ahead of time before they load. But I know stuff does get through, so I'd like a good solid antivirus, that won't annoy me when I'm playing games or downloading normal stuff. My last antivirus lagged my computer so bad, hell even if I opened My Images it would make me wait until it scanned the folder before it displayed the thumbnails... it also installed a proxy and had like 7 processes running (Norton).

So sugget to me a good antivirus. I'd prefer something free, but I don't mind paying for a quality one, as long as it isn't too expensive.

AVG free. Best there is

Best = Common Sense.
2nd = NOD32 ain't bad.

Paid Software -

Kaspersky Internet Security - What i use, it works great and to me is the best there is...

G-Data - A new Suite i found that uses Avast! and Bitdefenders engines to scan and protect you from virsues/malware

Bit Defender -Â It works i have used it before and its cheap but it wasnt for me..

Free Software -

Avira AntiVir - The best free software according to finding threats and getting rid of them... Really a good choice.

AVG - Been around forever, easy interface and works pretty good

Comodo Internet Security - Really REALLY REALLY good but requires a lot of set up and tweaking but its free, the best choice for free software if your willing to take time to tweak it...

Avast! - idk i dont like it and it didnt do anything close to perform when i tested it but others say it works so look into it...i guess.. lol

also in either case you dont want to just have antiviruse protection, please also look into Malwarebytes/SuperantiSPYWARE! and use them to scan your computer as well, it will help keep you safe and clean, i understand you use chrome and you avoid most of those sites but its just a precaution to have kinda like insurance.. They are free and will help you out, theres a whole list of good programs that are free like spybot, spwareblaster, etc etc but malwarebytes and superantispyware seem to perform the best for me and others!!! Hope this helps!

G-Data Internet Security 2010, beacuse it uses 2 antivirus engines to scan stuff.

I use Avast! it's free and works really well. I like it. You also have the option to do a boot time scan which is awesome.

Kaspersky is the best antivirus i have ever used...my friend recommended it. It scans so much, can also find ANY virus (It isn't free)

1) AVG, is you dont want to pay
2) McAffe, used it for 1 year so far and no problems

Sunbelt Vipre. Â

And whoever said McAfee...fool.
