Well, if you're aware of everything you should be aware of, you have flashed your phone with an alternative rom without Google Apps, in which case you can use K9-Mail, which is also available on F-Droid (of which you can install the package manager app from the website), which only contains trusted open source software that is safe to use (and also makes everything really fast). K9-Mail integrates with APG, the android version of GnuPG, the open source encryption software (that actually works and is not weakened by the NSA). K9-Mail has all the looks and features (and much more) of the Google Mail Software, supports pretty much all possible mail protocols, and works perfectly with modern groupware software like Kolab. It's by far the best mail application for Android for the moment.
I'm particularly pissed at Google at the moment and want very much to avoid using any of their services (other than being able to load all my shit from the play store), mostly because Eric Schmidt is determined to undermine privacy. Do you think that using K-9 in a normal Nexus installation of Android will keep the Google beast at bay, or will they still likely be stealing my passwords and reading my emails? (I don't have the time to switch over to CM right now. I'll take care of that soonish, though.)
@Zoltan do you have any links for the type of stuff we should be aware of? It has just recently entered my mind to move away from the stock Android installation on my phone.
I've just moved over to Android from ios and am trying a bunch of different email clients out. Does anyone know if it's possible to play back audio or video files within any email app as you can do in ios? The same goes even just for pictures.
I'm very happy with the switch overall but the above is one area that's still feeling a bit clunky in my current setup.
I am unaware of that functionality in Android. You might be able to get an app that opens an audio file in a mini player thing on top of the email app (kinda like FB messenger). Not sure about opening photos like that.
