which i already own (note at the moment i have 6 x 2tb ssd’s im going to use for my raid5 maybe even raid5e config)
i dont have an immediate need to go beyond 6 drives for this build but if the stated lsi card can be used for my purpose an how to use it i might go an get it.
I’d suggest a different seller for starters. If they can’t be ar5ed to put up 2 images of the same card or worse, don’t see the difference between the cards in the pair of images they used, how are they gonna support you knowledgeably if something went wrong with your purchase?
Second, you mention an adapter for SATA drives, yet the card you linked to is SAS. There is some compatibility between the two, but not universal and certainly not bidirectional I take it the mentioned drives are indeed SATA drives, so the M.2 to SATA adapter you already have is just fine under Linux.
As for how to set up your RAID, Wendell already published a video on why hardware RAID is dead. Go watch that, he’s a better educator then me (as he has essentially a video production shop at his disposal, where I don’t ).
TLDR: don’t use hardware RAID, like the one on your mobo. Linux mdadm is far superior and has significantly better recovery rates when (not if) a drive or even the entire array fails.
The 9361-8i was nice 10 years ago as a hardware RAID controller (still have one lying around), software RAID on a modern CPU will outperform it significantly.
“RAID5” is not a specific statement, do you want to use hardware or software RAID? In the non-Windows world there is practically no reason to use hardware RAID in the present.
i want to set up a raid5e config an i did figure out that the ubuntu server could i just wasn’t sure which
add-on part was best suited , my current plan was to put the 10Gtek M.2 to SATA Adapter in
the 2nd m.2 slot on my ASRock B550M PG RIPTIDE Micro for 2 main reasons 1 the mobo only has 4 x sata connectors , 2 the way iv modded my SST-RM23-502 case iv got 3 x 120mm fan near but up against the mobo
