Best 140mm fans I have are two Noctua NF-P14.
A bit outdated now since Noctua has much newer models with better performance, but they're still very good performance-wise. And still running silently after 4 years of heavy usage.
Noctua are pretty much the go to for fans. They run very well
personally i like cougar fans. i have three 140mm in my case, and two of their 120mm pwm fans on my H80i GT.
ek vaders bro
they have been scientifically proven by one guy to be the best in cfm and db
i have 3 of the AF140's from corsair, they are quiet and push alot of air id recommend them they are pretty cheap too!
The 140mm fans made by Cougar are always ones I recommend; they always do great in round-ups, an they are a good quality build without being too outrageously priced. I know that Phanteks, Corsair, Arctic Cooling, Noctua and Be Quiet! all made good 140mm fans, too, with a balance of performance and being quiet.
Currently, I am personally using a variety of Thermalright fans. They're nice build quality, with a good ball-bearing-based fan. On my CPU heatsink, I am using the Extreme edition, which can spin up to 2500 RPM to deliver 130 CFM. The noise is actually not that invasive.
Yeah i just got a four pack of 120mm Cougar fans. The only noise that 4 of them at 12v make is the sound of moving air. The 140mm version is probably good
I use the Fractal Design Silent Series 140mm fans there good silent and fairly cheap i run all mine at 800rpm and thay are wisper quiet http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16835352007
The Corsair Air Series AF140 Quiet Edition are good too but a little to expence for a fan i think thay look great tho and come with different color rings to change there aesthetic http://www.amazon.com/Corsair-Series-Edition-Single-CO-9050009-WW/dp/B007RESGGC
I only run Noctua fans on my closed loop unit >_>
My personal favorites are the Phanteks PH-f140SP.
The downsides to these are that the mounts are still 120mm but the fans are 140mm. this means that if you have a dual fan intake that has stacked 140mm mounts, they will not fit side by side.

They are decently silent, PWM control, and come in great colours if you are building a themed PC
I like Alphacools DS fans they move a good amount of air, look nice, and are fairly quiet. Noctua has been disappointing me lately but, they really do make great fans, be warned the industrial versions are ear bleedingly loud; but, they are likely the best fans outside deltas for cooling. Really for fans it depends on what you are using them for, on a radiator you would have a much different fan then if you needed a case fan that had little/no obstructions. As such no brand really makes a fan that does both at the same time well.
I am currently using Noctua 140MM and am revamping my build with a 2 tone color theme and these fans just wont fit into the deign so I was going to get the industrial ones. You say they are loud what if I added sound dampening materiel to my case with a fan controller with adjustable slides I should be able to control the sound levels, what do you think will that work? Performance is way more important to me than sound I don't mind noise but you make it sound like they are really bad.
I think that would work fine actually the Industrial line of fans really are great with sound damping and running them at low RPM when the systems not under heavy load with the right setup it could be next to silent. I have a Corsair Air 540 loaded up with the 2000 RPM versions and the case is open with no sound damping so it's loud even with the fan controller. If I run them at 40% or so they aren't annoying to me but, they are audible.
If you go that way just steer away from the 3000 RPM fans as to my ears they have a different sound profile due to the extreme RPM and at low power input still run so fast they still make tons of noise. That said the 3000 RPM version are among the best performing static pressure fans money can buy.
Does anyone know if stacking 2 fans together makes a difference because I've been told multiple times it doesn't but I tested it see it it seems to push alot more air
noctua foams at the mouth :D
You may gain some air flow CFM improvements depending on the fans, for example using a AF fan to feed a more powerful fan. This kind of setup does technically work though it is such a minor gain and: is unsightly, expensive, and horrifically lame. LTT did this way back with a push pull radiator setup; while not exactly what you are talking about the concepts from push pull are applied to this just the same.
The relatively low gains from such a setup and the higher cost make this a very rare process it is just not recommended. At best a dual fan setup allows the 2nd fan to function at it's theoretical best; worst case the air turbulence cancels out much of the air pressure and movement making the dual fan setup worst off then a single configuration.
Quite so, they also tend to be under performing, overpriced, brown, and the better versions make peoples ears bleed.
Go go team Noctua!
Do they only come in one color?
I had an extra noctua laying around and I just switched cases my setup is kraken x60 mounted at the top in push pull corsair said it wouldn't fit but is sure as he'll did its got 2 noctua 140mm pushing and 2 fractal 140mm pulling I don't know if that's the best way to have them or if I should switch them but then I took my extra noctua 140mm and mounted it on top of the stock corsair 750D fan exhausting out the back of the case and the before and after from what I can tell by putting my hand there and feeling the air it has atleast doubled the air flow and when I put my hand over the top where the radiators 4 fans exhaust the double fan setup blows much harder definitely over twice as much so I don't know exact numbers just what I can feel and it doesn't look ugly at all the case is so big it looks pretty natural if you ask me I like it because supposedly the 750D has air flow problems I'll take a picture shortly and post it
I have the brown noctua and I'm going to get the black ones which are industrial I like them better and can't wait to test them out I wish there was some way to safely paint the brown ones
