Benefits of Console Gaming

Console gaming does have its benefits that I think the TEK crew isn't taking into consideration.

It's more balanced because everyone is using a controller, so you aren't relegated to purchasing a mechanical keyboard with some specialized mouse, or even with a low latency monitor.

You can own a physical copy of the game, which isn't being stored on the cloud. When society falls apart, you will still be able to hook up solar panels / generator and play your game, without having to download it from some centralized server.

It's more difficult to hack, which also ties into the benefits of it being balanced. Less add ons and potential to mod to seek advantage over others.

Limitations of what you can do can also be a benefit, because you don't have distractions. You can't alt + tab, so you are less likely to stop playing to enter youtube or check out the forums, so you actually spend more time playing your game and less time doing other things.

These are some major benefits that the Tek Crew doesn't see, so I actually think there's a place for console gaming still. Even though it does hold us back technically and graphically by the software. It is relatively overpriced in regards to what is available in computer hardware.

But 1. distractions. 2. controller parity and balance, is more than enough for cause for me to buy a console version of a game over a PC version of a game.

In some ways buying PC multiplayer games are a gamble. For example, if you bought the latest version of COD, the community is pretty much dead in comparison to the consoles. For new franchises it can be worrisome, so it's relatively safer to stay with the console version.

Mechanical keyboards have very little (in the form of macro keys) or no impact on gaming performance, they're mostly a preference thing.

PC also has physical copies of games stored on hard drives inside the computer itself. Additionally, many games on consoles nowadays are becoming more reliant on the cloud.

If you're getting distracted by things like that then the game probably isn't a very good one IMO.

I do not disagree that console gaming has it's benefits but everyone has their own opinions on this topic.

Well I had a desk and a computer monitor, but because of space I got rid of it, so it's difficult for me to play PC games with a mouse / keyboard because I have to lean forward all the time and use my coffee table as a stand for my peripherals.

So I use a couch / coffee table / 60 inch tv.

So in a huge way, this is why I bought the division on PS4 over PC. Comfort. Despite having a gtx 970 and an 8350.

I cannot use a controller on a PC game that is focused on aiming. It would be dumb and wouldn't be fair.

So in a huge way, for my setup, there's no other option, because I cannot intentionally gimp myself with a controller while everyone else is doing 360 no scopes with their mouse / keyboard.

Now if I had the corsair lapdog, we' be in business...

It does hurt my conscience knowing that I will be playing in 1080p over 2160p though, with less framrates :(

You don't have to buy expensive peripherals to be okay at playing pc games. A cheapo mouse and keyboard work just as well as higher end options, but they lack the premium feel of something more costly.

Its not common to have the full game on disk for consoles or pc. Usually its partially on disk and partially reliant on a download. This is the story on all platforms nowadays.

Yeah you haven't played CoD. Go play Bo2 or MW3. Its hack fest for dayssss.

If I'm alt+tabbing out of game its because the game is bad, not because I'm distracted by other things. I don't really find myself doing this anyways. I have something called a long attention span, that allows me to focus on one thing instead of needing to occupy myself with many different things.

This is just an idiotic blanket statement. BF3 multiplayer on PS3 is basically dead in the US, while I can still find loads of different servers to play on PC. Titanfall died on all platforms at the same time, which was about 2 weeks of time. In fact, buying multiplayer games on Steam is less of a risk then buying console versions. You can return steam games, while games bought on Xbox live or PSN can't be refunded. Even physical versions of console games cannot be returned in a lot of cases now. My friend tried to return BF4 for either Xbone or 360, but either way the gamestop told him that he couldn't return it because the physical version BF4 was just a code that was activated on your Online account. And since the box was opened, they had no way of testing if he had claimed the code or not. Long story short, no return and RIP $60.

If console gaming had not become popular Win 10 would need 1 TB......just for the OS

What on earth are you on about ?

Because, as we all know, you absolutely cannot get controllers with turbo and macro functions or ones with extra buttons like the Xbox pro/elite controller.

Yup I have never once own a physical copy of my favourite game for the PC. Similarly I have never ever downloaded a game on console, I mean how would you... They don't exist especially not in this day and age. No, physical media is here for good we tried that digital download nonsense and it did not work so we learned our lesson and went back to 12cm of plastic with a hole in the middle.

Wait, I know I am posting in jest but are you serious? Not owning the hardware you bought is a good thing? This is a joke right? This is the exact reason I stopped buying consoles. I could not use the hardware I paid for how I wanted. No the days of renting hardware from console manufacturers is over for me.

Yup I have fastidiously avoided the PS3 and PS4 PS button, the 360 and xBone's Guide button and the Nintendo Wii's home buttons which I should point out totally do not take you out of the game in an Alt+Tab like manner.

Listen I agree console have a a place... Or rather had. They used to be a genuinely useful thing but now they are just PCs, not even like a PC or based on one. No they are PCs, really shitty ones.

As for your online comparison, that used to be the other way round you know. The only reason it changed? Numbers. There were simply more people playing the consoles and your support of them in favour of PC is making the situation worse for everyone. Parity would be nice, shame console suck so badly they hold hardware form 3 generation prior back still.

Well, you show me an option that allows me to use a controller and be competitive in an FPS, on a PC, and I'll agree with you.

People on here sound bitter that my points are valid.

I don't want to argue. I just don't have any options because I'm not going to be uncomfortable by leaning forward every time I game on my PC. Certainly there's the lap dog, but clearly corsair has been spending 2 years on an ergonomic tray that sits on your lap, because it's so complex!

No really... I don't see any other options for those whom are gaming on a couch. Do you intentionally want to ruin your back when playing CS:GO, or do you want to play CS:GO and just never be any good with your controller? Certainly single player games are fine with controllers, but my point is specifically on competitive multiplayer games.

Sure. Steam controller. Job done good night.

I am bitter. Not becuaee you are right but because I have been there I fully supported consoles, not over PC because that was not in my.mind back then but supported consoles. I was Sony for like and before that Sega.

No I am bitter. The PS3 was a mistake. It was badly managed woefully supported by Sony and then destroyed when they took away OtherOS. By the way the not being hacked thing was a direct result of having support for Linux, when they took that away it took 4 months to hack it irreversibly. So you are very wrong.

Ehh... I'd rather use the xbox one controller and the steam controller is no substitute for a mouse / keyboard. I have one.

With physical media I can take my games on a trip and not have to download every single one on a hard drive before departing. There's benefits to having physical media...

I prefer it and I don't mind the 2 feet x 3 inches it occupies in my house.

Me too not a replacement, a supplement. I also use a PS3 controller on PC, guess where I got it? With my two dead PS3s.

fair enough, but at least on a console, I can be competitive in call of duty with a controller. On a PC you never can...

Trust me, I prefer PC any day of the week, and would actually rather play my games on the Pc hardware, but because of balance reasons... I can't. I'd have to totally go out and buy another monitor and desk and a replacement media center to resolve this situation, when all I need is the damned lap dog.

So for now, console is a + for me. It's not like the worst thing in the world that everyone claims it to be. It also plays my blu rays perfectly fine. I'm glad I have a PS4. I just wanted to shed light on how, in certain circumstances, having a console can be a good thing.

If your setup allows for you to game in comfort (like I used to have) then totally... there's no reason for a console, but now that I'm living it (due to space reasons,) I totally see the benefits to console gaming.

This is not a console VS PC thing at all.

This is a space thing? In which case sorry but PC wins again. You can built a PC smaller more powerful and still use controller from consoles with them.

Edit at this stage I am.just giving you shit for no reason.

You like consoles, that's cool. I don't agree but its fine.

I was using my 60 inch tv at my desk, but then I removed my desk and mounted my TV on the wall and eventually moved my chair out and set up a coffee table / couch with a wireless mouse and keyboard.

I did not foresee gaming being a problem, but after 2-3 hours of forcing yourself to lean forward, it gets to be troublesome. Maybe I need to work out or something or stretch and take breaks, but from experience I just am not as comfortable as when I can lean back in my couch with a controller in my hand.

The space issue is that I wanted somewhere that my girlfriend and I can share the TV with. So logically it would make sense for me to actually get a monitor and another desk for ppi reasons and just the fact that monitors are generally better as gaming / computer screens than TV's are, but it's still an expenditure that I'm not willing to make yet. Plus I don't really have room to set up another desk yet, so that would be the space problem.

If corsair can get their shit together and just release the lap dog... I swear I've been looking forward to it for over a year.

I made this thread because I was torn between getting the Division on PC versus PS4. I had to get it on the PS4... because of reasons specified :(. Even though I know it's inferior, I'm justifying these purchases because of my circumstances and really... it's the only option, other than just playing in pain all the time.

So I just wanted to share that consoles aren't the devil incarnate and for me, it's a temporary solution. Unfortunately, my gaming library will be on an inferior system... but it's the price I have to pay, in order to play the games I want to play, and still be competitive in multiplayer

The division is a 3rd person casual shooter... Its not competitive, and if you've played the beta or the released game, you'd know that the improved accuracy of the mouse really isn't needed because the time to kill is ridiculously high in that game. The division is by no means a CS:GO level of competition. Its really an arcade shooter for all intensive purposes. I played the beta on Ps4 and on PC when it was in Beta, too play with friends on Ps4 and PC because its better, and I was not impressed. The game doesn't require insane aim to be good. Its easypz, and you could totally lie down on the couch with a controller and still be really good at the Division if you can use a controller semi-competently.

And on that note, it also means auto-aim really isn't needed, because its arcadey. Seriously, I played Bf3 with auto-aim off on Ps3 and was a god at that and Division is even easier.

hehe

I don't know if that's a good thing or a bad thing. It's good because now I can comfortably play with a controller on the PC, but a bad thing that the longevity of the game will suck. I actually would much rather prefer a skill based game where I have to work at getting better with.

What do you think of the Division? Did you like it and are you going to buy it? I've only got an hour or two into it and haven't really experienced much story. It feels like destiny meets rainbow six.

As of today and what I've seen and played, I wish the movement was more fluid and I wish the gun play wasn't so meh. The amount of time it takes to kill someone is ridiculous. This will probably be one of those games that I wait a while until I can get it for less then $60. I don't think I will end up sinking as many hours into division as I have cs or battlefield. I don't think this is a game I will play solo much at all. I will definitely be playing with friends or probably playing something else. I don't have a retail copy yet, so take all of what I have said with a grain of salt, but from the beta, this is what I felt.

I don't understand you had ... a 60 inch on your desk and had to lean forward WTF are you on about would you not have to lean back to not see all the pixels what is going on.

It was a big desk and it was overkill for how close I was to it. I was about 4 feet back from the tv.

It's also worth mentioning that it's a 4k tv, so it makes sense to be closer to it.

I have a 60 inch as well and was very confused as I tried to use it with my PC for a little while then went back to me monitor from 07 but my desk is tiny and that is the setup I pictured. Mine was 1080p
