Beginner's Cooking Suggestions

Greetings. I must inquire, what is a good starting place for a beginner to gather knowledge of the culinary arts? Thanks for the recommendations.

I would start with knife skills.  It's paramount to be able to cut vegetables and other ingredients the same size so that they cook evenly.  I've heard many accomplished southern chefs say that the 3 things they can't live without in a kitchen are a sharp knife, a cutting board and a cast iron pan.  I very much agree with that because I use the same tools.  Make sure you buy a cutting board that doesn't dull your knife like a bamboo or a polymer board.   Learn how to properly hone your knife in between sharpenings.

As for literature a lot of people recommend the joy of cooking by Julia Child.  But there are so many free resources anymore (foodwishes on YouTube) that you don't have to necessarily buy it unless you want to learn basic French technique.  Oh that's another thing, be proficient with the mother sauces.  Know your temperatures for cooking proteins so that they are always moist and tender and not overdone.

I find my cooking comes out the best by buying fresh ingredients and not expecting more than my cooking skills allow.  I've set my expectations too high and I never have met them.

Thank you for recommendations. I will begin to expand my abilities using both of your input.

I know for me personally, I just started experimenting with seasoning in food I regularly cook.  I would put some extra red pepper in my chili, grill my burgers with some garlic powder, simple stuff like that.  As for actually cooking stuff, you could start simple with something like home made mac and cheese.  The internet is full of easy to follow recipes.
