Beast graphics card or 1440

I'm in the early stages of planning my next computer build. What I do know is I want a 780...however after looking around I also really want that fancy X-STAR 1440 monitor but for the sake of not spending too much money since I have a child being born in 2 months I capped myself at 1200 dollar.

My conundrum: For slightly over my budget I can get a 770 and a 1440p monitor, or I can get the 780 and keep playing at 1080p.

For those of you that play at 1080, what would you suggest?

I'm primarily building this computer to play games such as The Division and games coming out later this year early next year. Regardless of which card it is I'll be SLI when the generation becomes obsolete.

Personally, I'd get the 780, and then wait for a 1440p monitor with G-Sync - I know ASUS has one coming out fairly soon: ROG Swift PG278Q. Maybe then, you won't need to run SLI. If you can find a G-Sync monitor now that's 1440p, then a 770 may be enough, otherwise I'd stick with the 780 with a monitor upgrade down the road. As it is, the 780 has ~21% performance advantage over the 680 (770) at 2560x1600

The review covered a wide array of games, including the obligatory Crysis (and Crysis 3), as well as several other benchmarking staples in gaming.

Congrats on your child being on the way!!! as for your future build i would recommend going with the 1440p monitor, I was gaming with a 7950 for a while and it handled the resolution  fine i would turn down the Anti aliasing and i would get 45 fps in farcry 3 with everything maxed out except the aa of course. Im guessing the 770 would be able to do at least that. I have a crossover monitor http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00EZM7GCY/ref=oh_details_o06_s00_i00?ie=UTF8&psc=1 and its great so shop around and save a couple bucks.  Best of luck with the future build and parenthood hope this helped

Go for the 780 since if you do upgrade to 1440p in the future you'll already have a decent graphics card for it. And let's be honest, 1440p will probably become cheaper at some point in the not too distant future. Use 1080p as an example, they were not cheap when they first started becoming popular, but now you can got 1080p monitors for just over $100. For instance, my ASUS VS228H-P was close to $165 when I bought the first one a few years ago, but just last week I was able to get another one for $120. These were made well after 1080p caught on too.

I'm in a similar situation, (sans child, congrats!) but it might be worth it to upgrade to 1440p and see a difference. if you play games now @ 1080 and can max them out with no issue then having an even more powerful card wont make a difference because the game is already maxed out. At least with a 1440p monitor you will see a difference, and the 770 is a hell of a card to begin with (all hail the run-on sentence)

Thanks for the input. I didn't see any clarification on the website, is that the 780 ti or just the 780?

I think the 780 would be the better investment. Should you find yourself with a little extra cash, the 1440p monitor is only one click away as opposed to trying to sell the 770 and buy the 780 at a loss. Personally, for first person shooter games especially, I need higher fps. Trying to get 1440p to 96 hz is extremely difficult.

Congrats on your kid!

Get the 780 and the monitor if/when you can later.

I did this with the 680 over 2 lesser cards in SLI when I built my computer in Nov 2012 and am glad that I did. I kept my 8 y/o dell monitor and I managed to upgrade to a ASUS PB278 around 6 months later. It isn't more than 60hz but I don't play FPS games.

If you plan to do major gaming on it(especially fps's) I would recommend waiting for a G-sync or higher than 60hz 1440p monitor to hit the market.

770 2GB is fine for 1440p
