Battle of the Operating Systems (Opinionated)

First lets not start a war here, I am not trying to start a flame war etc...

Ok so there are 3 majors here, Windows, OSX and Linux.

I have played with all of them and feel I can make a good set of points :) Remember this is all opinionated!

1 Disadvantages of each system.

Windows - Very virus prone, very easy to exploit without the correct setup, It can be unstable, It has crap error reporting, I got bored of it as I use it daily, I dont learn much on it.

OSX - Too locked down via App Store, Expensive entry fee without Hackintosh, Pisses me off I cant replicate its looks perfectly, Too basic for me as again I dont learn much outside of terminal.

Linux - Dont have windows apps without Wine or KVM, can be a little tricky to setup, No full driver support (Ah well) Cant play all my games native.... Yet....

Okay they are my personal gripes with each OS but here are my advantages

Windows - Can play my games, I know it very very well, Almost every app I need is there, superb driver support, strangely at times Im glad of BSOD, easy to use (only because I have been on it since W95)

OSX - Stupidly easy to use which I like at times when I cant be arsed at all, Bit more defensive to viruses, Love the creative side with Final Cut, I love how it looks, The hardware looks superb.

Linux - Very secure out of the box, I have control over my system in anyway, No licences, No spying, FOSS!, makes me think in different ways via terminal, Can be easier than Windows once your familiar with it.

So a few personal ones there, I like each OS in their own respects, Im no hardcore user in anyway, and am no super pro with them, I know my way around windows enough to fix it when it breaks and how to solve problems on it, I know my way around OSX enough to help others, I cant do advanced repairs like windows but its an OS that doesnt really break :)

I know about Linux but not used to the filesystem or terminal etc, but I hope to do so soon, I cant do a lot of repairs on here but I know it well enough to install it and get it running.

So which is the best... Well if you have red this and taken it in, you will know none are, this is logical amongst a lot of people but some people still ask it, its all on your situation, Gaming is still king on Windows, OSX is still a power house for content creation via Final Cut X and its eco system with iProducts and Linux is still stable free and can be a monster in the correct hands.

So before asking, which is the best OS ever? try different ones, Get a virtual machine and run them, experiment and ask your self this question each and every time.

Personally I will more than likely keep switching to see what I like the most as my moods change, but never ask the question which is the best OS? without thinking of what shit you will cause via some communities and biased opinions.

Experiment is the only real way forward in this situation, but some people will never think like that they are too invested in the OS (I wont move from android because of this).

Hope I put some light on here.

May do stuff like applications etc also, I kinda like this series :)

First of all, it's Linux, which means it's not Windows. That means it has software written for it natively, independant of Windows. Windows is a separate OS; do you expect to put an Xbox game into a PS2 and have it play? No, because they're independant of each other. You can't use that as an argument against Linux.

Secondly, Linux has some of the best driver support, period. So many drivers are now built into the kernel, and those that aren't, which are incredibly numerous, are often better, open source, and covering a wider range of hardware than any other OS in the modern desktop environment.

Linux - Very secure out of the box, I have control over my system in anyway, No licences, No spying, FOSS!, makes me think in different ways via terminal, Can be easier than Windows once your familiar with it.

Nothing makes you use the terminal. Sure, it is often the easiest way to go about doing something, and has the most configuration, but the biggest misconception about Linux is that you have to install it via, or to do daily tasks with the terminal. There are GUI front-ends for pretty much everything; don't think that you have to learn Awk just to install Steam and play your games, or whatever people do nowadays.

I agree, how is ONLY being able to run 80% of all windows applications in a compatibility layer a disadvantage that linux has? How many linux apps can windows run? Half of windows apps are run faster in linux than in windows lolz... that ladies and gentlemen concludes this demonstration, garbage bins to get rid of your windows can be found on the way out...

I agree that over the years support has improved, both for software and drivers, the creation of steam on linux has brought a few people over from windows, but I just wish some games where pure native, Although I cant see EA porting over Simcity or Square-Enix porting Hitman over, but there are always ways around that.

So class it as a minor problem that I will soon figure out someway. I am still an infant in the Linux world :)

Also with drivers you cant get all the apps Windows supports, more a problem on companies problem due to Linux market, I cant get my Creative driver over here although native sound works well, The onboard cant be controlled as well, So hopefully Gigabyte or Creative shift their asses although I dont think they will update a year and half mobo.

And imagine if a PS2 could play Xbox games? Be such a better place :) Although I know Origin did it but Im unsure how that works.

And I know that you are not forced to use terminal, But I personally find it better than a GUI, I find it easier to type than go through GUI, this is a major case for me with Linux, I like the fact I type in a command and its there waiting, the fact networking is better on linux makes it that much sweeter.

And again Zoltan its from the apps I use, Although I will find alternatives, and then I shall update this, I dont think it will take long to replace the adobe suite, Already I have GIMP and Darktable. Just need something for screen capture.

And you really hate windows dont you like with a passion lol, Although I dont blame you, half of the time I use Linux to fix Windows issues, maybe a bootloader issue, NTLDR or viruses.

Well you have to understand that I've been using linux as main OS since 1996. That has given me a totally different perspective on Microsoft and Windows. When the news about the "third key" came out, I didn't care, because I was already using linux, but I found the apathy of the Windows users flabbergasting: they seemed to care even less than linux users. And the absurdity and stupidity has only been growing since then. People have actually been buying new scanners printers sound cards, etc, because by upgrading Windows, their not even that old existing hardware wasn't compatible anymore, people have been putting up with the typical windows files with all the zeros as placeholders for malware in them, so that microsoft doesn't have to change the size of windows system files when they add malware, which could set off some alarms, and people keep buying more and more storage products because windows wastes so much space, whereas it doesn't even support HDD's of more than 2 TB, etc... I just don't get it that people can be so easily victimized and conned, and that they keep pumping money into something horrible like that. But then again, I have a totally different point-of-view, as I have been escaping the great windows-brainwash since 1996.

Of course, I often overact the anti-closed source blah, but hey, desperate times demand desperate measures... When everybody in the industry is "behaving", nothing will ever change. Revolution is often the only way to change a regime that is too deeply rooted for it's own good. Microsoft is not going to stop causing massive prejudice to consumers without some noise and chaos.

The best proof is that you have this automatic reflex of thinking that another operating system should be like windows and should run windows closed source applications. I'm not blaming you for it, not at all, you see the difference, you are doing something about it, you're acting intelligent, you're jumping into Arch, you don't take anyone's word for anything, you want to explore and learn, that's great!... my own sister believes that linux is dangerous (well maybe she's more afraid of being like me, and maybe she blames linux or something lolz, who knows right), and won't even let her son play with Doudoulinux, she will not use trust anything that isn't sold by Microsoft, she doesn't trust computers that are not sold with windows preinstalled because she actually thinks that there is something wrong with them, and a lot of people are like that, because they don't see the damage, just like many religious nutcases think that having sex is like taking a bite from an apple and then having to pay for it your entire life... if everybody is mad, madness is not perceived as a problem, but normality is... based on that principle, it took humanity 6000 years to abolish slavery, it took humanity 6000 years to think of an alternative for the feudal system and start to carefully implement it. There are still many countries in which everything is "property" of a royal family where the rights to own and dispose of everything and everyone transfers from parents to children, and nobody questions it, even though it's the stupidest concept ever, and I'm not even talking about obscure third world countries, I'm talking about the UK and Belgium, the only western world countries that still create new noblemen, and Belgium, which is the capital of the EU, has 2 kings and 3 queens, laws against criticism of the royal family, that include special courts for "political crimes" (which include criticism against the royal family) and "journalistic crimes" (yeah right...), in which people don't really have the right to a public trial, but still can be sentenced to an undetermined period of losing all civil rights and being put "at the disposal" (literal terminology of the law) of the government, a government with very extended executive and faux-legislative powers that are exerted by means of "Royal Decrees". Still this is taken for granted, unless by people that are liberated of such abnormalities. The same goes for religious norms, the same goes for personal computers.
